  • Phil Jones employed Nigel and Angela Stubbs as cleaners for three years
  • The £80,000-a-week player sacked the couple following a row over £300
  • Mr Stubbs claimed he asked for petrol money to help Jones move house
  • Now the couple could face life on the dole after losing their £24,000-a-year jobs

Manchester United midfielder Phil Jones has been blasted by his former cleaners who claim the £20million player sacked them because they asked him for petrol money to help him move home.

Husband and wife team Nigel and Angela Stubbs requested £300 from the centre back, who earns around £80,000 a week, for fuel money after helping Jones and his fiancee Kayla Hall move into their new £5million mansion.

The couple, who are both 51, said they were sacked in November with just six hours' notice and could face life on the dole after losing their jobs.

Mr Stubbs and his wife had a successful cleaning company and were hired by Jones to help tidy up his old house before he moved in following his transfer in 2011 from Blackburn Rovers.

Jones then offered the couple a full time job, which has now left them in a precarious financial position now that their only client has gone.

Mr Stubbs told Sarah Ridley and James Mills of the Sun on Sunday: 'Phil has behaved like a skinflint towards us.

'For someone worth several millions of pounds I can’t believe he’s kicked off over just £300.

'This is all because they took issue when we asked for help with a petrol bill, which we only spent because we were helping them move house.'

Jones and his fiancee were originally living in a £2 million house in Bowden, Cheshire, but moved to the £5 million mansion in Alderley Edge - a distance of approximately 10 miles.

Alderley Edge is home to fellow Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, former England international Peter Crouch and Take Me Out presenter Paddy McGuinness.

It is understood Noddy Holder from Slade also has a home in the village.

The couple claimed they had spent three years working for Jones before their dismissal.

As part of their deal, they also received a Skoda Octavia, which they were forced to hand back.

However, lawyers for the Manchester United player claimed the couple had asked for an advance on their £24,000-a-year wages, which was against the terms of their contracts.

Now the couple have said they are going to take Jones to an employment tribunal.
