An enormous tree has smashed through model Ireland Baldwin's backyard as a powerful storm batters parts of California.

Baldwin posted footage of the fallen tree across her driveway on Instagram on Friday saying she was blocked in until it could be cleared.

'So this is my drive way... anyone expecting me to get anywhere this weekend it's not happening! Thanks for understanding,' the 21-year-old wrote.

The huge tree had crashed through a fence and blocked off access to Baldwin's driveway.

Hundreds of trees and dozens of power lines had toppled in the Los Angeles area by Friday afternoon as the fierce storm hit parts of southern and central California. 

Heavy rains and gusting winds prompted rescues and injures from flooding and fallen trees.  

Precautionary evacuations of homes in some neighborhoods were also requested due to the potential for mudslides and debris flows.

At least one person, a 55-year-old man, has died in the storms after he was electrocuted when a tree downed power lines and fell on a car.

Firefighters had to use ropes and inflatable boats to rescue seven people and two dogs from the Sepulveda basin area of the Los Angeles River, including one with non-life threatening injuries. 

Meanwhile, a 75-foot tree fell onto an apartment building near UCLA, narrowly missing someone who was in bed. Authorities say four of the six apartments have been declared unsafe to enter, and 16 college students have been evacuated.

The storms are expected to continue into Saturday.

For now, the storm will mostly steer clear of Northern California, where the bulging Oroville Dam threatened to give way to erosion last week.
