We tell the story of Mouawiya Syasneh, the boy whose anti-Assad graffiti lit the spark that engulfed Syria.

Mouawiya Syasneh was just 14 when he sprayed anti-government slogans on his school wall in Deraa, Syria. It was February 2011, and he could never have imagined that such a minor act would spark a full-blown civil war.
More than half a million people have been killed in Syria since the start of the war. Mouawiya's home city has been ravaged by street fighting, shelling and barrel bombing. The war has left scars that may never heal.
Now a young man, fighting on the frontline for the Free Syrian Army, Mouawiya admits that had he known what the consequences of his actions would be, he would never have taunted the country's president, Bashar al-Assad.
His life has been transformed by that adolescent prank. He has lost friends and relatives, including his father. And Syria has been changed forever.
The Boy Who Started the Syrian Civil War offers a glimpse into life in Deraa since the start of the conflict.
We meet Syrians trying to lead normal lives amid the chaos as well as those who have taken up arms against Assad's forces.

The Syrian civil war has affected the lives of millions of children and displaced over 50,000 of them thus far. These are children who in one moment were playing with their toys and the next are struggling to accept the destruction of everything they once loved. They have no involvement in the politics that led to this war. They are just kids.
Kids whose innocence is forever tainted by the horrors of warfare. And many of these kids are in the brink of losing their lives due to lack of food and medical supplies. There is no good reason their lives should be cut so short and I can’t just simply ignore it because it is happening on the other side of the world. This is OUR world, our brothers and our sisters. What happens to them is happening to us.
I know many people would rather turn the other way but if it weren’t for people who care enough to help, thousands more would die. Every contribution helps save a life in Syria and represents the love and empathy this world needs to heal this planet. So, me and my partner created this charity to donate to two organizations that are actively saving children on a daily basis.
Mercy USA has been actively helping since 2012 and ensuring that hundreds of families have food to eat and supplies such as winter clothing, winter mats and sleeping mattresses. On top of providing these winter necessities, Mercy is installing eco friendly stoves that will keep families warm throughout the winter.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) are in the frontlines of war providing medical care to thousands of people who desperately need it. But since they’ve begun working there, many of their facilities have been bombed and have deprived thousands of Syrians of medical care. But they haven’t retreated. They remain there saving the lives of as many people as possible. But these two non-profit organizations cannot do this without us.
Doctors Without Borders and Mercy USA are only able to help as many people they can through the donations they recieve. People who care enough to contribute are the reason these organizations can operate. So lets help them continue to save lives and Syria. Lets save lives together. This video is a bit different from what I made before. These videos do take a lot of time and so they will always be about whatever I am interested about in that moment. This time, it is the Syrian civil war, and my goal was to make a short video that provides all the information important to understand the basic conflicts. I know that it is a controversial topic, and I tried to keep this video as neutral and informative as possible. It is not complete, the war is very complex, but I tried to provide a good starting point for everyone to do further research.
I named the series of this video "Mapped" because I will explain a lot from satelitte perspective. Note that this is heavily influenced by the ARTE series "Mit offenen Karten", which you can check out here:

Footage taken by the Syrian Democratic Forces shows their capture of three children who had been fighting alongside ISIS. The children tell their captors that they had been coerced into fighting with ISIS. One of the militia fighter says that the children are under 15 years, but that ISIS "plant in their heads the idea that we are pigs and apostates" and "sends them to the front in order to fight us."

Syrian people
The Syrian people (Arabic: الشعب السوري / ALA-LC: al-sha‘ab al-Sūrī; Syriac: ܣܘܪܝܝܢ) are the inhabitants of Syria, and their ancestors who share a common Levantine Semitic ancestry. The term also refers to the citizens of Syria, regardless of ancestry, mother tongue, ethnic identity, or culture.
The cultural and linguistic heritage of the Syrian people is a blend of both indigenous elements and the foreign cultures that have come to rule the land and its people over the course of thousands of years.
The Syrian republic has a population of nearly 17 million as of 2014, in addition to 4 million Syrian refugees. The dominant racial group is the Syrian descendants of the old indigenous peoples who mixed with Arabs and identify themselves as such in addition to ethnic Aramean. The country also includes the following ethnic minorities: Armenians, Assyrians, Circassians, Greeks, Kurds, and Turkmens.
The Syrian diaspora consists of 15 million people of Syrian ancestry, who emigrated to North America (United States and Canada), European Union member states (including Sweden, France and Germany), South America (mainly in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and Colombia), Australia, and Africa.

Anadolu Agency (Turkish: Anadolu Ajansı, abbreviated AA) is a state-run press agency in Turkey.
History
The Anadolu Agency was founded in 1920 during the Turkish War of Independence. Journalist Yunus Nadi Abalıoğlu and writer Halide Edip, fleeing the occupied capital, met in Geyve and concluded that a new Turkish press agency was needed. The agency was officially launched on April 6, 1920.
Services
Anadolu Agency provides wire news service, an image library, news graphics and video. Its remit is to provide news of Turkey and the Turkish government to the rest of the world. The B2B products are available in English, Turkish, Arabic, Bosnian, Kurdish, Russian and French among others. The agency aims to deliver its products in 11 languages as of 2020. This video is a bit different from what I made before. These videos do take a lot of time and so they will always be about whatever I am interested about in that moment. This time, it is the Syrian civil war, and my goal was to make a short video that provides all the information important to understand the basic conflicts. I know that it is a controversial topic, and I tried to keep this video as neutral and informative as possible. It is not complete, the war is very complex, but I tried to provide a good starting point for everyone to do further research. Kids whose innocence is forever tainted by the horrors of warfare. And many of these kids are in the brink of losing their lives due to lack of food and medical supplies. There is no good reason their lives should be cut so short and I can’t just simply ignore it because it is happening on the other side of the world. This is OUR world, our brothers and our sisters. What happens to them is happening to us.
I know many people would rather turn the other way but if it weren’t for people who care enough to help, thousands more would die. Every contribution helps save a life in Syria and represents the love and empathy this world needs to heal this planet. So, me and my partner created this charity to donate to two organizations that are actively saving children on a daily basis.
Mercy USA has been actively helping since 2012 and ensuring that hundreds of families have food to eat and supplies such as winter clothing, winter mats and sleeping mattresses. On top of providing these winter necessities, Mercy is installing eco friendly stoves that will keep families warm throughout the winter.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) are in the frontlines of war providing medical care to thousands of people who desperately need it. But since they’ve begun working there, many of their facilities have been bombed and have deprived thousands of Syrians of medical care. But they haven’t retreated. They remain there saving the lives of as many people as possible. But these two non-profit organizations cannot do this without us.
Doctors Without Borders and Mercy USA are only able to help as many people they can through the donations they recieve. Kids whose innocence is forever tainted by the horrors of warfare. And many of these kids are in the brink of losing their lives due to lack of food and medical supplies. There is no good reason their lives should be cut so short and I can’t just simply ignore it because it is happening on the other side of the world. This is OUR world, our brothers and our sisters. What happens to them is happening to us.
I know many people would rather turn the other way but if it weren’t for people who care enough to help, thousands more would die. Every contribution helps save a life in Syria and represents the love and empathy this world needs to heal this planet. So, me and my partner created this charity to donate to two organizations that are actively saving children on a daily basis.
Mercy USA has been actively helping since 2012 and ensuring that hundreds of families have food to eat and supplies such as winter clothing, winter mats and sleeping mattresses. On top of providing these winter necessities, Mercy is installing eco friendly stoves that will keep families warm throughout the winter.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) are in the frontlines of war providing medical care to thousands of people who desperately need it. But since they’ve begun working there, many of their facilities have been bombed and have deprived thousands of Syrians of medical care. But they haven’t retreated. They remain there saving the lives of as many people as possible. But these two non-profit organizations cannot do this without us.
Doctors Without Borders and Mercy USA are only able to help as many people they can through the donations they recieve. People who care enough to contribute are the reason these organizations can operate. So lets help them continue to save lives and Syria. Lets save lives together. This video is a bit different from what I made before. These videos do take a lot of time and so they will always be about whatever I am interested about in that moment. This time, it is the Syrian civil war, and my goal was to make a short video that provides all the information important to understand the basic conflicts. I know that it is a controversial topic, and I tried to keep this video as neutral and informative as possible. It is not complete, the war is very complex, but I tried to provide a good starting point for everyone to do further research.
I named the series of this video "Mapped" because I will explain a lot from satelitte perspective. Note that this is heavily influenced by the ARTE series "Mit offenen Karten", which you can check out here:

Footage taken by the Syrian Democratic Forces shows their capture of three children who had been fighting alongside ISIS. The children tell their captors that they had been coerced into fighting with ISIS. One of the militia fighter says that the children are under 15 years, but that ISIS "plant in their heads the idea that we are pigs and apostates" and "sends them to the front in order to fight us."
