Earth /ˈɜːrθ/ (also the world, in Greek: Γαῖα Gaia, or in Latin: Terra) is the third planet from the Sun, the densest planet in the Solar System, the largest of the Solar System's four terrestrial planets, and the only astronomical object known to harbor life.
According to evidence from radiometric dating and other sources, Earth was formed about 4.54 billion years ago. Earth gravitationally interacts with other objects in space, especially the Sun and the Moon. During one orbit around the Sun, Earth rotates about its own axis 366.26 times, creating 365.26 solar days or one sidereal year. Earth's axis of rotation is tilted 23.4° away from the perpendicular of its orbital plane, producing seasonal variations on the planet's surface with a period of one tropical year (365.24 solar days). The Moon is Earth's only permanent natural satellite. Its gravitational interaction with Earth causes ocean tides, stabilizes the orientation of Earth's rotational axis, and gradually slows Earth's rotational rate.
Earth's orbit is the path in which the Earth travels around the Sun. The average distance between the Earth and the Sun is 149.60 million kilometers (92.96 million miles) and a complete orbit occurs every 365.256 days (1 sidereal year), during which time Earth travels 940 million kilometers (584 million miles). Earth's orbit has an eccentricity of 0.0167. Earth's orbital motion gives an apparent movement of the Sun with respect to other stars at a rate of about 1° per day (or a Sun or Moon diameter every 12 hours) eastward as seen from Earth. Earth's orbital speed averages about 30 km/s (108,000 km/h; 67,000 mph), which is fast enough to cover the planet's diameter in seven minutes and the distance to the Moon in four hours.
Viewed from a vantage point above the north poles of both the Sun and the Earth, the Earth would appear to revolve in a counterclockwise direction about the Sun. From the same vantage point, both the Earth and the Sun would appear to rotate in a counterclockwise direction about their respective axes.
Crash Course (also known as Driving Academy) is a 1988 made for television teen film directed by Oz Scott.
Crash Course centers on a group of high schoolers in a driver’s education class; many for the second or third time. The recently divorced teacher, super-passive Larry Pearl, is on thin ice with the football fanatic principal, Principal Paulson, who is being pressured by the district superintendent to raise driver’s education completion rates or lose his coveted football program. With this in mind, Principal Paulson and his assistant, with a secret desire for his job, Abner Frasier, hire an outside driver’s education instructor with a very tough reputation, Edna Savage, aka E.W. Savage, who quickly takes control of the class.
The plot focuses mostly on the students and their interactions with their teachers and each other. In the beginning, Rico is the loner with just a few friends, Chadley is the bookish nerd with few friends who longs to be cool and also longs to be a part of Vanessa’s life who is the young, friendly and attractive girl who had to fake her mother’s signature on her driver’s education permission slip. Kichi is the hip-hop Asian kid who often raps what he has to say and constantly flirts with Maria, the rich foreign girl who thinks that the right-of-way on the roadways always goes to (insert awesomely fake foreign Latino accent) “my father’s limo”. Finally you have stereotypical football meathead J.J., who needs to pass his English exam to keep his eligibility and constantly asks out and gets rejected by Alice, the tomboy whose father owns “Santini & Son” Concrete Company. Alice is portrayed as being the “son” her father wanted.
In physics, an orbit is the gravitationally curved path of an object about a point in space, for example the orbit of a planet about a star. Orbits of planets are typically elliptical, and the central mass being orbited is at a focal point of the ellipse.
Current understanding of the mechanics of orbital motion is based on Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which accounts for gravity as due to curvature of space-time, with orbits following geodesics. For ease of calculation, relativity is commonly approximated by the force-based theory of universal gravitation based on Kepler's laws of planetary motion.
Historically, the apparent motions of the planets were described geometrically (without regard to gravity) in terms of epicycles, which are the sums of numerous circular motions. Theories of this kind predicted paths of the planets moderately well, until Johannes Kepler was able to show that the motions of planets were elliptical motions.
The celestial spheres model is a geocentric model of the solar system originally used to explain the apparent motion of the planets in the sky. It posited the existence of perfect moving spheres or rings to which the stars and planets were attached. After the planets' motions were more accurately measured, theoretical mechanisms such as deferent and epicycles were added. Although it was capable of accurately predicting the planets' positions in the sky, more and more epicycles were required as the measurements became more accurate, hence the model became more and more unwieldy.
A low Earth orbit (LEO) is an orbit around Earth with an altitude between 160 kilometers (99 mi) (orbital period of about 88 minutes), and 2,000 kilometers (1,200 mi) (about 127 minutes). Objects below approximately 160 kilometers (99 mi) will experience very rapid orbital decay and altitude loss. The orbital velocity needed to maintain a stable low Earth orbit is about 7.8 km/s, but reduces with increased orbital altitude.
With the exception of the manned lunar flights of the Apollo program, all human spaceflights have taken place in LEO (or were suborbital). The altitude record for a human spaceflight in LEO was Gemini 11 with an apogee of 1,374.1 kilometers (853.8 mi). All manned space stations to date, as well as the majority of satellites, have been in LEO.
Objects in LEO encounter atmospheric drag in the form of gases in the thermosphere (approximately 80–500 km up) or exosphere (approximately 500 km and up), depending on orbit height. Objects in LEO orbit Earth between the atmosphere and below the inner Van Allen radiation belt. The altitude is usually not less than 300 km for satellites, as that would be impractical due to atmospheric drag.

This short animation shows how the Earth remains tilted as it revolves around the Sun. This tilt is the cause of our seasons - when the Sun is shining directly down on the Northern Hemisphere (when Earth is to the left here) it's Summer everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere and Winter for everyone in the Southern Hemisphere. Half a year later, (when the Earth is on the right side of the screen) the seasons are reversed. The Sun shines directly down on the Sourthern Hemisphere making them have Summer, while it's Winter in the North. I have also created a version of this you can watch with 3D glasses. The Earth passes through four seasons as it orbits the Sun, along with increasing daylight length in the six months between the winter and summer solstice and decreasing daylight length between the summer solstice and the winter solstice. We also experience a 24-hour cycle that is the Earth’s daily rotation, and a 28-day cycle that is the Moon’s rotation around the Earth. These are cycles that repeat indefinitely. However, many subtleties are hidden in and around these cycles, that most people do not know about, cannot explain, or do not notice.

Actual audio of John Glenn describing atmospheric particles during his first orbits around the earth on February 20, 1962. Although the particles were later dismissed as ice crystals coming from the craft, Glenn at the time said they were all over the sky, that they were not coming from the capsule, and that they were something that was already up there. Glenn later described them as being like "fireflies." Could Glenn have observed a vast swarm of bioluminescent atmospheric life, like plankton of the ocean? This clip includes all transmissions with Glenn's descriptions of the particles. During one period, Glenn is out of contact with ground stations. We have left the period of silence intact to suggest how he must have felt during that time, alone in space, hurtling through a vast swarm...
Earth, also called the world and, less frequently, Gaia (and Terra in some works of science fiction) is the third planet from the Sun, the densest planet in the Solar System, the largest of the Solar System's four terrestrial planets, and the only astronomical object known to accommodate life. The earliest life on Earth arose at least 3.5 billion years ago. Earth's biodiversity has expanded continually except when interrupted by mass extinctions.[31] Although scholars estimate that over 99 percent of all species, amounting to over five billion species, that ever lived on the planet are extinct, Earth is currently home to 10–14 million species of life, of which about 1.2 million have been documented and over 86 percent have not yet been described. Over 7.3 billion humans depend upon its...

What is an orbit? How do orbits work? We will discuss how low earth orbit can be achieved by launching satellites in space using high horizontal velocity during launch. Launching satellites in orbit is possible by understanding Newton's theory of gravity and how Einstein refined the ideas of how gravity works and the definition of gravity. Finally, we will discuss zero gravity in low earth orbit and how satellites and astronauts float in space. --------------- Hello welcome to get smart in science. here we're going to explain what an orbit is and i have a few key questions that i want to point out to you that we're going to answer here and the goal is to take something seemingly complicated and break it down so that it's understandable and only a few minutes. First thing we're goin...
Black Knight also known as the Black Knight satellite is an alleged object orbiting Earth in near-polar orbit that ufologists and fringe authors believe is approximately 13,000 years old and of extraterrestrial origin. However it is most probable that Black Knight is the result of a conflation of a number of unrelated stories.[1] Stories[edit] Fringe authors claim that there is a connection between long delayed echos and reports that Nikola Tesla picked up a repeating radio signal in 1899 which he believed was coming from space. The satellite explanation originated in 1954 when newspapers including the St. Louis Post Dispatch and the San Francisco Examiner ran stories attributed to retired naval aviation major and UFO researcher Donald Keyhoe saying that the US Air Force had reported that...

NASA / ESRSU / Phaeleh / Seán Doran Meditate on the beauty of our home. Orbit is a real time reconstruction of time lapse photography taken on board the International Space Station by NASA's Earth Science & Remote Sensing Unit. The structure of the film is built around a nested selection of Phaeleh's last three albums; Lost Time, Illusion of the Tale & Somnus. The tone & pacing of each track influenced the choice of material used. Typically each time lapse sequence was photographed at 1 frame per second. Each sequence was processed in Photoshop. A dirtmap was made in order to repair dust, blemishes and hot pixel artifacts that would otherwise confuse the re-timing phase of the workflow resulting in strobes and distracting blurs. Science Activity Kit: http://amzn.to/2tuxQ7E Students are shown, through the use of computer animation, the scientific principles responsible for our planet's yearly cycle of seasons. The tilt of the earth's axis and the planet's orbit around the sun are discussed. Other planets in our solar system are compared to earth, as terms such as revolution and rotation are defined. In addition to exploring the seasons, topics covered include: the role leaves play in the survival of trees and plants, photosynthesis, the reasons for changing autumn colors as trees prepare for the winter, and the explanation for day and night.
