Legislative Council nominations

Legislative Council candidates can stand as:

  • independent ungrouped candidates
  • independent grouped candidates
  • registered political party endorsed candidates.

Below is a description of how candidates nominated at the 2014 State election. This process may change before the 2018 State election. For more information see the 2014 State election Legislative Council candidate guide - RO17 (PDF 517.33 kB).

Independent ungrouped candidate

Independent ungrouped candidates are unaligned to other candidates.

To nominate as an independent ungrouped candidate you must:

  • be nominated by at least 250 persons enrolled and qualified to vote for the Legislative Council district at the close of rolls
  • lodge a completed nomination form accompanied by the details and signatures of at least 250 nominators
  • pay a $3,000 deposit in cash or banker's cheque.

Intending candidates must contact the Returning Officer for the Legislative Council to arrange a time for nomination lodgement. Nominations must be lodged before the close of nominations. It is recommended that nominations be lodged early to allow checking of nominator names.

Independent grouped candidate

Independent grouped candidates are listed on the ballot paper with other similar candidates by agreement. They are not members of registered political parties.

To nominate as an independent grouped candidate you must:

  • be nominated by at least 250 persons enrolled and qualified to vote for the Legislative Council district at the close of rolls
  • lodge a completed nomination form accompanied by the details and signatures of at least 250 nominators for every candidate
  • pay a $3,000 deposit in cash or banker's cheque for every candidate.

Intending candidates must contact the Returning Officer for the Legislative Council to arrange a time for nomination lodgement. Nominations must be lodged before the close of nominations. It is recommended that nominations be lodged early to allow checking of nominator names.

Registered political party endorsed candidate

To nominate as a registered party endorsed candidate, complete a nomination form and return it to your party's registered officer at least four days before the close of nominations.

The registered officer of a registered political party may then lodge directly with the Electoral Commission SA.

Registered officers must submit the following to the Electoral Commission SA, no later than the date set for close of nominations in the Writs:

  • all of the party's nomination forms
  • a deposit of $3,000 in cash or banker's cheque for each candidate nominated.
