Vandal attacks wrong car in case of 'mistaken identity'

A Perth man has released CCTV footage he says shows a vandal defacing his car in a case of mistaken identity.

"I said to myself that 'I'd better sort this out and review the footage from my security camera' and this is what I found at around 4.40am"

Images sent to WAtoday show a hazy figure who appears to be tampering with, or scratching the vehicle parked in Mr Allert's car port.

The left of the picture shows the rear of another vehicle. Some people who have commented on the video say it could be a Toyota Prius.

"It looks to me as if there is an illuminated sign on the back of the car, similar to some signs that I have seen on the back of taxis," said Jake.

"So I have put the video up on "Perth - Have a Whinge" Facebook page in the hope someone can tell me more about the car or about the man who scratched my car."

Jake and his family think the vandalism could be the result of mistaken identity.

"My girlfriend's mum said she heard some stuff in the early hours of the morning, like someone jumping the fence and running through the yard.

"We are left wondering if someone used a taxi to get to our street in Willagee and then jumped out and ran away without paying.

"Maybe because he jumped our fence and ran down our yard the taxi driver thought he had come into our house and decided to damage the runaway's car - but got mine instead."

Jake said he had forwarded the video and relevant information on to the police but so far had heard nothing back.

"I was kind of expecting they would be able to contact the taxi companies and track down who was in the Willagee area at the time, but there have been no developments."

Jake has paid for the repairs to his vehicle, and had to take out a payment plan to do so.

"It cost quite a bit of money but I could not go around with that scratched into the side of my car," he said.
