Barry Manilow

A: It's A Miracle
B: One Of These Days
I bought this single in Buffalo as soon as it hit the airwaves, and I had a Columbia Pitman pressing that unfortunately died in a Cap'n Crunch incident that's still too painful to talk about. After the success of "Mandy," Ron Dante and engineer Michael DeLugg went into the studio to overhaul the production for single release and remix four tracks from Barry Manilow's self-titled Bell debut for reissue on Arista. All this while recording sessions were taking place for Barry's third album (and technically his Arista debut), Tryin' To Get The Feelin'. Dante and DeLugg presented label head Clive Davis with a 3:45 remix of "It's A Miracle," and he took the master and had it cut down to 3:16 for single release (editing out two repeats of the opening riff on the introduction, then cutting from "dancin' in the streets" in the second chorus to the same line in the third chorus, right before the breakdown) — and that edit doesn't surface much anywhere. Methinks it might have been a quick cut-and-paste job that was mastered hot and discarded. Such were the ways in those days. Oddly enough, "One Of These Days" is the original Bell version and not the remixed version that would surface on Barry Manilow I.

Miss Prim And The Classroom Kids

A: The Toddle
B: Miss Prim's Theme
Yes, indeed, that's the celebrated lyricist Cynthia Weil as Miss Prim, aptly demonstrating why she never pursed a singing career — a situation with which she was most assuredly fine. Aldon was never above chasing the latest trend, and when 'dance' records were the craze, I'm sure Barry & Cynthia were drafted to come up with something appropriate.

The Cuff Links

A: Run Sally Run
B: I Remember
Ron Dante did all the vocals on the "Tracy" album, and had also done the original lead vocals on "Run, Sally, Run," but when Kirshner offered him a solo deal after the huge success of The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar," he told Paul Vance he couldn't record as The Cuff Links anymore. Vance was so incensed that he brought Joe Cord in to do new lead vocals on both "Run, Sally, Run" AND "I Remember," which Ron had sung on the "Tracy" album.
