What is private/incognito browsing and how does it impact my experience on The Australian

The Australian uses cookies to store your status (logged in, logged out) in your chosen browsers on desktop, tablet and mobile web browsers. This means that each time you return to The Australian, the website will remember you and automatically log you in, if you were logged in on your last visit.

Private Browsing (on the Safari browser) and Incognito Mode (on the Chrome browser) prevents cookies from being activated on websites you are visiting. As a result, our systems cannot detect whether you are a returning visitor or not, so it will ask you to login again.

How do I know if I am in private/incognito browsing mode?

In the safari and chrome browsers, the browser background (address bar/navigation tools) will be black, rather than white, which is the default background for both browsers.
