On February 19, 1942, 188 Japanese planes attacked Darwin in two air raids, killing 235 people, wounding 400 and drawing the top end of Australia into World War II. The Battle of Darwin was the largest and most destructive single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia and led to the worst death toll in the nation's history. Now, one of the last surviving World War II veterans to witness the Darwin bombings says the soldiers were never prepared for the attacks.

Mithun Hunugund, from Bengaluru, southern India, was on safari in Nagarhole National Park when he saw the Asiatic wild dogs attempting to ambush two young elephant calves (circled bottom right). He filmed the female elephant running at the dogs, swinging her trunk, pawing the ground and attempting to kick the predators away (left and top right). Mr Hunugund witnessed the adult elephants create a barrier between their young and the predators before the four tonne female charged.
Eerie drone footage reveals full horror of devastated Italian hotel where 29 people died when it was hit by 60,000 tons of snow in a catastrophic avalanche
The footage shows the remains of the Hotel Rigopiano in the Abruzzo region, which was crushed by an estimated 150,000 tonnes of snow. The footage, taken from the air above the scene of the tragedy, shows how the building collapsed under the weight of the snow. Tragically 29 people died on January 18, but 11 people survived, staying hydrated by eating snow.
