Too late now to say sorry? Justin Bieber called in sick to deposition over ripping off hit song - but posts photos of himself chugging beers with friends just hours later

  • Last year indie musician Casey Dienel sued Justin Bieber for allegedly ripping elements from one of her songs for use in his hit track 'Sorry'
  • But in a scheduled deposition for the case on February 8, Bieber's lawyer emailed saying the singer was 'ill' and couldn't make it
  • Mere hours later, Bieber posted several photos of himself hanging out with friends and was spotted chugging beers at a house party
  • Dienel's lawyers fired back at Bieber's sick day, saying 'he has thumbed his nose at this court, the lawyers involved...and the judicial system'

Rather than attend a scheduled deposition in a legal battle over his hit pop song 'Sorry,' Justin Bieber had better plans.

In an age-old hooky move, the singer was set to appear on February 8 in Santa Monica court, but shortly before the deposition began, Bieber's lawyer emailed saying he was 'ill' and would not be in attendance.

Hours later, Bieber posted several photos to his Instagram account of himself drinking with friends, and videos surfaced on YouTube of him chugging beers with Super Duper Kyle at a house party and a nightclub.

Lawyers for indie musician Casey Dienel, who claim that Bieber stole portions of her 2014 single 'Ring The Bell' for use in his later track 'Sorry,' immediately fired back at the star and demanded he be sanctioned.

'Justin Bieber is not above the law,' court documents filed by Dienel's lawyers stated.

'Justin Bieber knowingly and in bad faith failed to appear at his scheduled, agreed upon deposition on February 8, 2017 in Santa Monica, California.

'While Plaintiff maintains the right to petition the Court to levy maximum sanctions against Defendant Bieber, as he has thumbed his nose at this Court, the lawyers involved, including his own lawyers, and the judicial system: A court order compelling Justin Bieber to appear in-person in Nashville, Tennessee for his deposition.'

Lawyers also complained that a legal team flew from Boston to California for the deposition, following months of planning between the two parties.

'The parties could have waited later in the day or even taken Bieber’s deposition the next day, but, upon information and belief, counsel of record for Defendant Bieber could not contact his client to re-arrange the deposition.

'[He is] implicitly celebrating that he has violated the law, the respect for this Court, and the respect for all the parties and counsel who flew to California to accommodate Defendant Bieber,' court documents read

Last year, Dienel sued Bieber for allegedly using her vocals in 'Sorry' without permission or payment. The 31-year-old American singer claimed the 'unique characteristics of the female vocal' in 'Ring The Bell' are exactly what can be heard in Bieber's hit.

In addition to vocal similarities, Dienel claims both tracks feature keyboard synthesizers, samples, synth bass, drums and percussion.

She sued for unspecified damages; Bieber denied he stole her vocals and demanded the suit be thrown out.

After his recent sick day, Dienel is now demanding the court order Bieber to appear next month in Nashville to be grilled under oath on the case.
