At least 20 overdose at Melbourne dance party

More than 20 people have been hospitalised, many critically ill, after overdosing on what is believed to be a synthetic version of the drug GHB at the Electric Parade concert at Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Saturday night. Vision courtesy ABC News 24.

Many of those treated were described as being in a critical condition.

"The majority of those treated by paramedics had overdosed on GHB," Ambulance Victoria State Health Commander Paul Holman said.

"It's a drug that causes people to become unconscious, slows the heart rate and can cause seizures.

"A fleet of ambulances was brought in to transport the overdose patients to The Alfred, Royal Melbourne and St Vincent's hospitals.

"It's the highest number of overdoses we have seen at a music event for some time."

The event is scheduled to head north on Sunday to the University of Sydney.
