Perth's Anzac House to be demolished and rebuilt

Perth City Council has voted to knock down the current state headquarters of the RSL - and replace it with a new ten storey building with 'million-dollar' views of Government House and the Swan River.

When the new building is complete the RSLWA will have a brand new club and offices alongside will have brand new club, function room and cafe alongside news commercial office space.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the decision was an exciting step forward for the RSL.

"The building seeks to capitalise on the views across Government House gardens and the Swan River, taking full advantage for its fantastic location.

RSL State President Peter Aspinall said that many veterans and associates will be sad to see the end of the current Anzac House, but having a new purpose built facility will provide RSLWA with the ability to take advocacy and welfare to a new level.

"RSLWA will encourage other ex-service organisations to co-locate and work beside the RSL to deliver broader and more comprehensive services to veterans," he said.

WA's veterans have had a central Perth headquarters since 1916 when the Soldier's Institute was set up in Government Gardens.

Later Perth's first ANZAC House was opened on October 5th, 1934 and replaced by the current ANZAC House which was opened On November 14, 1981, and refurbished and reopened again on January 27, 2006.
