A 15-year-old in Alice Springs suspected to have been involved in a home invasion and the assault of an 87-year-old woman has been arrested.

The attack on the elderly woman on Friday, which left her missing a tooth, caused outrage in Alice Springs.

The woman was in bed when two intruders climbed through a window and began rummaging around her home.

It was the second time her home had been broken into in a week.

She got out of bed and challenged the intruders, who attacked her with a golf club.

"A 15-year-old male has been arrested in Alice Springs in relation to the unlawful entry and assault of the 87-year-old," NT Police Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said.

"He was actually spotted by CCTV operators in the Alice Springs Mall in the early hours of this morning."

Ms Jorgensen said the 87-year-old was in "reasonable spirits" despite her ordeal.

"We are doing regular patrols of her house and keeping in touch with her," she said.
