A 20-year-old man whose body was recovered from the ocean off Western Australia's South West this morning may have fallen off rocks and into the water, according to police.

A large-scale ocean search was launched after the man disappeared about 4:30pm on Saturday.

The search resumed this morning at first light and authorities recovered the man's body shortly before 11:00am, about 18 kilometres north of Augusta.

Police earlier thought the man may have dived into the water to save a friend, but the circumstances remain unclear.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
