THE FEDERAL Government, via the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has committed to a bilateral agreement with the NSW Government for grains research similar to those in place in other states.

The deal will see investments of over $130 million in grains R&D in NSW.

Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce said the $130 million, 10 year agreement will build on the current research and development partnership between GRDC and the NSW Government.

NSW Farmers grains committee chair Rebecca Reardon said she was pleased to see the long term commitment to the grains industry.

“It is good news for growers to see certainty in R&D investments.

The money will be spent on a range of projects including agronomy, pathology, plant breeding, pre-breeding, farming systems, nutrition, soils and grain quality.

Mr Joyce said the investment would secure research investment at Tamworth, Wagga, Wagga. Condoblin, Yanco and Trangie.

He said the announcement aligned with the Federal Government’s decentralisation agenda by driving downstream employment opportunities in regional communities.

Minister for Primary Industries in NSW Niall Blair said the agreement will enable better forward planning for resource and infrastructure requirements at DPI grains research facilities to ensure world class research and development for NSW grain growers.
