July 1969. The world waits to see man walk on the moon as Joan is reacquainted with an old flame… and Annie returns home to find she cannot cope without her baby.

When Annie meets resistance from the Hospital’s Social Worker to reclaim her child, Joan becomes committed to fight for Annie’s cause. Meanwhile Patricia’s mother visits and offers her daughter an early exit from Stanton House.

Viv’s brother Bernie arrives in Kings Cross on leave from Vietnam and offers her an escape. Patrick McNaughton comes face to face with the grief and loss he’s created by adopting Annie’s baby.

Joan takes a step toward becoming a doctor. During an anti-war demonstration Johnny hits a Police officer and is arrested when Shirley needs him most.

Joan’s relationship with McNaughton becomes personal as she uncovers the shocking truth about Annie’s baby. Shirley’s husband is injured at war and is likely to be flown home within days.

November 1969. The day of the Melbourne Cup. As the nation comes to a halt, Martha gives birth to a son and Joan tells Annie her precious baby daughter is alive.

When Annie discovers the McNaughton’s have her child, she sets out to claim her baby back, compromising all of Joan and Phillip’s efforts to help her.
