20th Century Fox has announced a special edition Blu-ray of the film will be released on March 13, 2012, to commemorate the film's 35th anniversary. The disc include the special features from the DVD, but will also include a 24-page book including rare artwork from the film and an introduction from Bakshi.

In a post-apocalyptic future, humankind is destroyed and the fantastic races of ancient legend emerge to repopulate the earth. In fulfillment of an ancient prophesy twin sons -- wizards -- are born to a queen of the faeries: one good, the other aggressively evil. They are destined to collide in a war that will destroy the new earth. Blackwolf, the evil son, is a deformed mutant and is cast out of the community. He seeks to rediscover the ancient technologies of warfare and destruction in order to gain his revenge and subjugate the free peoples of the earth. Avatar, the good son, is human and seeks a passive life of non-aggression in order to avoid responsibility for the bloodshed and despair prophesied. Blackwolf's disastrous attempts to assassinate his brother compel Avatar to marshal forces against Blackwolf, leading to the ultimate confrontation.
Starring the vocal talents of Bob Holt, Jesse Welles, Richard Romanus, David Proval, Jim Connell, Steve Gravers, Barbara Sloane, Angelo Grisanti, Hyman Wien, Christopher Tyback, and Mark Hamill.
Directed by Ralph Bakshi.
Trivia
Some of the shadow-warrior footage was taken from Zulu, El Cid, Patton, Battle of the Bulge, and especially Alexander Nevsky.
The original title, "War Wizards," was changed to avoid confusion with another 20th Century Fox release, Star Wars.
No pencil tests were done on the film because of its low budget. The drawings went straight to the final product.
The horse-like animals had two feet instead of four because it was easier and cheaper to animate.
Due to the dark imagery from the shadow-animation, this movie is a favorite for Midnight Movie shows around the world, whose primary market are teenagers.

Plot
Earth has been devastated by a nuclear war instigated by five terrorists, and it has taken two million years for the radioactive clouds to once again allow sunlight to reach the surface. Only a handful of humans have survived, while the rest have changed into mutants who roam the radioactive wastelands. In the idyllic land of Montagar, the true ancestors of man — fairies, elves and dwarves — have returned and live in peace. During a celebration of 3,000 years of peace Delia, queen of the fairies, falls into a trance and leaves the party. Puzzled, the fairies follow her to her home and discover that she has given birth to twin wizards. Avatar, a kind and good wizard, spends much of his boyhood entertaining his mother with beautiful visions, while Blackwolf, a mutant, never visits his mother, but spends his time torturing small animals.

In fulfillment of an ancient prophesy twin sons -- wizards -- are born to a queen of the faeries: one good, the other aggressively evil. They are destined to collide in a war that will destroy the new earth. Blackwolf, the evil son, is a deformed mutant and is cast out of the community. He seeks to rediscover the ancient technologies of warfare and destruction in order to gain his revenge and subjugate the free peoples of the earth. Avatar, the good son, is human and seeks a passive life of non-aggression in order to avoid responsibility for the bloodshed and despair prophesied. Blackwolf's disastrous attempts to assassinate his brother compel Avatar to marshal forces against Blackwolf, leading to the ultimate confrontation.
Starring the vocal talents of Bob Holt, Jesse Welles, Richard Romanus, David Proval, Jim Connell, Steve Gravers, Barbara Sloane, Angelo Grisanti, Hyman Wien, Christopher Tyback, and Mark Hamill.

The horse-like animals had two feet instead of four because it was easier and cheaper to animate.
