Having been a part of the Fairfield community for 42 years, it's no wonder that the Kenyukan Goju Ryu Karate Academy is a well known and trusted neighbourhood establishment. Sensai Alexander de Araya took the time to tell us all about this wonderful organisation.
Tell us a bit about your organisation. What are your goals for the community?
We teach traditional Okinawan martial arts, incorporating women's self defence, anti-bullying skills and general fitness and well being. We have been actively involved with schools and community groups and have participated in after-school activities in the past. Our goal involves getting people into fitness and sport related activities, emphasising martial arts as the ultimate pastime for the whole family to enjoy.
What’s the best thing about your organisation?
Our quality of teaching and professional outlook. Our chief instructor is a man dedicated to the sport and has been in the field for more than 50 years. We have fully accredited instructors with tremendous experience and know-how.
What’s the best thing about the community your organisation operates in?
The diversity and racial harmony, its sport minded spirit and people willing to have a go.
Do you have any campaigns or events coming up? How can residents get involved?
We have a free Introduction to Okinawa Martial arts operating at the moment. Residents can come and enjoy a few free lessons, and then ascertain whether this is what they are looking for. There's no obligation and the doors are open to all.
