"Definitely a book worth reading, regardless of the labels of normalcy you've pasted up to yourself or grown accustomed to letting others do the nasty gluing for you."—Bookslut

"The divide is growing between the pro-military, pro-police, marriage-seeking gay and lesbian rights politics we see in the headlines every day and the grassroots racial and economic justice centered queer and trans resistance that fights to end prisons, borders, war and poverty. Queering Anarchism a vital contribution in this moment, providing analysis and strategies for building the queer and trans politics we want and need." —Dean Spade, Normal Life

“A much-needed collection that thinks through power, desire, and human liberation. These pieces are sure to raise the level of debate about sexuality, gender, and the ways that they tie in with struggles against our ruling institutions.”—Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz,
Outlaw Woman

“Against the austerity of straight politics,
Queering Anarchism sketches the connections between gender mutiny, queer sexualities, and anti-authoritarian desires. Through embodied histories and incendiary critique, the contributors gathered here show how we must not stop at smashing the state; rather normativity itself is the enemy of all radical possibility.”—Eric A. Stanley, co-editor of Captive Genders

What does it mean to "queer" the world around us? How does the radical refusal of the mainstream codification of GLBT identity as a new gender norm come into focus in the context of anarchist theory and practice? How do our notions of orientation inform our politics?and vice versa?
Queering Anarchism brings together a diverse set of writings ranging from the deeply theoretical to the playfully personal that explore the possibilities of the concept of "queering," turning the dominant, and largely heteronormative, structures of belief and identity entirely inside out. Ranging in topic from the economy to disability, politics, social structures, sexual practice, interpersonal relationships, and beyond, the authors here suggest that queering might be more than a set of personal preferences?pointing toward the possibility of an entirely new way of viewing the world.

Contributors Include: Ryan Conrad, Sally Darity, Jamie Heckert, Farhang Rouhani, Jerimarie Liesegang, Benjamin Shepard, Gayge Operaista, CRAC Collective, Stephanie Grohmann, Sandra Jeppesen, Susan Song, Diana C. S. Becerra, Jason Lydon, Liat Ben-Moshe, Anthony J. Nocella, II, AJ Withers, Saffo Papantonopoulou, and Hexe.

Deric Shannon, C.B. Daring, J. Rogue, and Abbey Volcano are anarchists and activists who work in a wide variety of radical, feminist, and queer communities across the United States.

He is a member of Queers without Borders and a believer in radically different futures.

J. Rogue is a queer intersectional anarchist-communist who has been organizing in anarchist, feminist and radical queer communities for over ten years. Much of her organizing has centered around HIV/AIDS, prisons, and militarism. She has also been involved in transfeminist organizing with Camp Trans, and participated in several radical queer and feminist conferences and projects over the years. Rogue is a member of the Workers Solidarity Alliance and currently lives and works in Austin, Texas.

This is packed with really thought-provoking essays that I mostly found to be spot on. And I appreciate that the essays are approachable and not strictly written for academics. I took issue with Abbey Volcano arguing that types of heterosexual relationships can be called queer, but it would be a poor collection if there was nothing I disagreed with. I don’t know if I’m an anarchist or not yet but an anarchist perception of my gender makes a lot of sense to me.

This volume is one of the most important recent books discussing queer anarchism, the ideas that play together in a growing field of theory and methods for organizing, and especially adds to the new intersectional anarchism. A well chosen and diverse set of pieces, this really should be a primary selection for people looking to expand their notions of radical queer studies, organizing, or revolutionary anti-authoritarianism. One of the best books of the year.

Exactly what I was expecting! Great product - I would absolutely recommend this to anyone.

Being queer isn't, in itself, anarchic. These are essays on intersectionality and identity politics, with a bit of anarchist chat dripped over a few pages like drops of candle wax. Some of the pieces are actual essays, some are merely personal accounts of ... life, I guess. Nicely put together, which accounts for two of the three stars on this review.

I am passionately in love with this book! To say that this is now my all time favorite book is no exaggeration. It's orgasmic! Covering topics like polyamory, sex work, class struggle, transfeminism, anarcha-feminism, harm reduction, prison abolition, ableism, queering heterosexuality and more, "Queering Anarchism" challenges the hegemony of the mainstream LGBT movement's conservative agenda of gay marriage, gays in the military, and hate crime legislation. In short, this is radical intersectional politics at its best! That said, while I really love this book, I disagree with the final essay, "Anarchy, BDSM, and Consent-based Culture", by Hexe. In this essay, Hexe likens anarchism to BDSM as they are both based on the principle of consent. To me, however, sadomasochism is the antithesis of anarchism and has no place in an anarchist, egalitarian sociey. Not only does BDSM eroticize unequal power relations, it totally trivializes the horrific experiences of battered women, rape survivors, torture victims, political prisoners, and slaves. For example, I can't imagine that many African-Americans enjoy being flogged. Personally, I want to live in a culture devoid of sadism, where Arabs are not routinely tortured in places like Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib and women are not routinely humiliated in hardcore BDSM pornography. Furthermore, while I'm not a vegan, I'm sure that many vegan anarchists would likewise be turned off by the notion of leather sexuality. While I don't agree with Hexe's essay, I do nevertheless think it is well-written and certainly provocative. Overall, this book is fabulous and I cannot reccomend it enough!!!

So, Queering Anarchy is a fantasy dream come true! I agree with the last reviewer that it is orgasmic (except I would argue that its multi-orgasmic because it has so many short and sweet chapters that make it so hard to put down.) Its one of the best books ive ever read, really. I can be feeling so depressed about oppression and society, pick up this book, and just become totally enamored, empowered and happy from the varying critiques and inspiring alternatives. How many books have you read that can do that? It's great company in a world that can otherwise feel so isolating. Its also very easy to read because the information is incredibly rich and intellectual without being pretentious or very hard to follow, an equally appropriate read for those who are newbies or familiar with the topic(s). The writing styles are fresh, creative, thoughtful and engaging. Go read it!

Numerous spelling and grammatical errors. Each essay is purely whatever the topic is "101" and some have an annoyingly smug vibe. Maybe not bash the marginalized people who you're trying to "queer" as part of your anarchism? I'm looking at you, "Abbey Volcano".
