Q&A;: Repairing alloy wheels

I?ve got a three-year old Mercedes-Benz C-Class which I?m thinking of selling in the next few months before the new model arrives. The car is in excellent condition, apart from some kerb damage on the alloy wheels. How easily can this be repaired and is it worth it?

It really depends on how severe the damage is to the wheels as to whether it?s worth repairing. If it is a few light scratches, then it is a simple process that involves re-welding metal to the outer rim and fill in the scratches before machining and polishing them back to original condition. If the wheels are painted, or powdercoated, then it may cost extra to re-colour them.

It?s best to get a professional body shop to do this as they will also repair any cracks in the rim and can check that they are structurally sound. If the damage has been created by a severe hit, then the wheel could also be buckled. While the rim can be straightened, it might end up being more cost effective to purchase a replacement wheel in the end.
