Cathy McGowan: Member for Indi

Superannuation

Industry Super Australia has released a report indicating that significant numbers of Australians have been underpaid superannuation. The report indicates there is $22.9 million owed to 16,707 employees across the Upper Goulburn Valley, Wangaratta, Benalla, Wodonga and Alpine. Each of those employees is owed an average of $1371.

Cathy has written to the Minister for Finance Kelly O'Dwyer for urgent action in line with the report’s recommendations to provide the ATO with more resources. The letter also requests the aFair Work Ombudsman be empowered to recover lost entitlements.

There is a clear legislative framework for the ATO to protect employees. The legislation only works however if there is adequate resourcing for the ATO to respond quickly to all claims, large and small.

The Parliament has established a Senate Inquiry to look into unpaid super. You can make a submission to the inquiry here. Submissions are due by 17 February 2017.
