Jaguar unveils in-car fuel payment

Shell partnership targets business drivers with hassle-free transactions.

Jaguar has unveiled a new weapon in its push to woo corporate customers away from luxury rivals.

A new partnership wth Shell allows Jaguar's British customers to pay for fuel without leaving their car - you fill up, use the vehicle's touchscreen to approve the purchase, and drive away.

Better still, the system sends fuel receipts to your email address, making it easier to account for expenditure on the road.

The Shell app works through PayPal or Apple Pay, and it is set to feature in 2018 model year XE, XF and F-Pace models. Existing cars built since 2014 may also be compatible with the system.

Jaguar is also looking for ways to make the feature work with parking and drive-through food payments.

It could mean the end of corporate fuel cards for leased or company cars, as Jaguar could simply approve fleet payment plans for large numbers of vehicles.

Jaguar spokesman Petr Virk says the system will save customers time.

"In a world where cash is no longer king, customers are increasingly using electronic payments and contactless cards. Making a payment directly from a car's touchscreen will make refuelling quicker and easier," he says.

"With this new system you can choose any pump on the forecourt and pay for the fuel even if you've forgotten your wallet or can't find your credit or debit card."

Shell says the system is exclusive to the UK for now, but that it "will be rolled out to additional markets globally during 2017". A spokesman for Jaguar in Australia told Drive it is likely to be available locally in 2018.
