A nurse can expect to work in a number of different environments including hospitals, schools, travel clinics, hospices, GP surgeries and large corporate offices. A nurse's main duty is to care for a wide variety of people, making initial judgements and administering medical care to people with a number of different complaints.
Within a hospital setting a nurse might work in an operating theatre, in the emergency ward or the intensive care unit. Their duties will vary considerably based on where they are located. Nurses based on a ward are often responsible for making an initial diagnosis as well as drawing up a treatment plan and deciding which procedure might be best for a patient. If you have a caring and compassionate nature and you want to make a difference then nursing could be perfect for you. Nurses regularly report having one of the highest levels of job satisfaction out of any career.
As well as assessing a patient, a nurse is responsible for listening to the needs of patients and for teaching patients self-care techniques. They also educate patients about certain conditions and provide advice to the families of patients in their care. They might administer medicines and apply treatments and dressings to wounds. They try to make sure the patient is comfortable at all times and they often provide services of a personal nature like helping patients to get dressed or bathe. They need to keep doctors informed of their patient's progress and meet with other members of the healthcare team.
