The Republican Party, commonly referred to as the GOP (abbreviation for Grand Old Party), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, the other being its historic rival, the Democratic Party.
Founded by anti-slavery activists, modernists, ex-Whigs, and ex-Free Soilers in 1854, the Republicans dominated politics nationally and in the majority of northern States for most of the period between 1860 and 1932. There have been 18 Republican presidents, the first being Abraham Lincoln, who served from 1861 until his assassination in 1865, and the most recent being George W. Bush, who served from 2001 to 2009. The most recent Republican presidential nominee is former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who lost in 2012 to Democratic incumbent Barack Obama.
Although it is named after republicanism, that concept is no longer widely used. Instead republican ideals have been incorporated into the concept of conservatism, which serves as the ideological core of the party. This conservatism contrasts with the modern liberalism of the Democrats. The Republican Party's conservatism involves support for free market capitalism, free enterprise, business, a strong national defense, deregulation, restrictions on labor unions, social-conservative policies (particularly opposition to abortion), and traditional values, usually with a Christian foundation. The party is deeply split on the issue of how to deal with illegal immigration.
Jason E Chaffetz (/ˈtʃeɪfᵻts/; born March 26, 1967) is the U.S. representative for Utah's 3rd congressional district, first elected in 2008. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Chaffetz was born in Los Gatos, California, and was raised in Arizona and Colorado with his younger brother Alex. His father, John A. Chaffetz, was Jewish, and his mother, Margaret A. Wood, was a Christian Scientist. Chaffetz's paternal grandfather was Maxwell (Max) Chaffetz (1909-1986), an FBI Special Agent, who as a rookie was involved in the apprehension of gangster Baby Face Nelson and the gunning down of gangster John Dillinger.
Chaffetz converted from Judaism to Mormonism during his last year of college. He attended Brigham Young University (BYU) on an athletic scholarship, and was the starting placekicker on the BYU football team in 1988 and 1989. He still holds the BYU individual records for most extra points attempted in a game, most extra points made in a game, and most consecutive extra points made in a game. Chaffetz graduated from the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications in 1989, with a B.A. in communications.
North Carolina (i/ˌnɔːrθ kærəˈlaɪnə/) is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the 50 United States. North Carolina is known as the Tar Heel State and the Old North State.
North Carolina is composed of 100 counties. Its two largest metropolitan areas are among the top ten fastest-growing in the country: its capital, Raleigh, and its largest city, Charlotte. In the past five decades, North Carolina's economy has undergone a transition from reliance upon tobacco, textiles, and furniture-making to a more diversified economy with engineering, energy, biotechnology, and finance sectors.
North Carolina has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet (2,037 m) at Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River. The climate of the coastal plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical climate zone. More than 300 miles (500 km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.

Help us cover the political revolution: http://www.patreon.com/TYTNation "Former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) signed House Bill 17 after it was introduced by Republican lawmakers in December. The law requires that Cooper’s Cabinet picks be approved by the state’s GOP-controlled Senate. It also prevents Cooper from appointing anyone to the University of North Carolina Board of Trustees or the state Board of Education. “We need to put these partisan confirmation games behind us and get on with repealing HB2, raising teacher pay and getting better jobs for North Carolinians,” Cooper said in a statement Wednesday. “The court is absolutely correct in their decision and should not be intimidated by threats from legislative leaders.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/north-carolina-...
On Thursday night, Republican representative and chairman of the House oversight committee Jason Chaffetz was greeted by a chorus of boos and chants of "do your job," at a town hall in his home state of Utah. During the event, Chaffetz faced questions on everything from his plans to cut Planned Parenthood funding to why he hasn't looked into Donald Trump's potential conflicts of interest. According to a report, thousands were denied entry into the town hall despite empty seats due to concerns about crowd control. Those outside continued to protest the congressman by chanting "Chaffetz is a coward" and "your last term." Reports add that Chaffetz ultimately ended up leaving the event 40 minutes early. http://www.elle.com/culture/career-politics/news/a42935/utah-rep-jason-chaffetz-town-hall/ ...
