What qualities makes a good Keynote Presentation?

Knowledge? Humor? Style?

Yes, those 3 BUT probably the most important quality is passion and we all know how passionate people are about WordPress and the Community.

As much as people like to hear about success, they also relate to lessons learned, struggles and failures.

I decided to highlight keynote presentations from WordCamp St. Louis and WordCamp Rochester.

The Path to Success with WordPress: Business, Blogging and Community

WordPress Community Interview With Pascal Birchler

Pascal Birchler resides in Zurich, Switzerland and is a student and a passionate developer. He was a co-organizer of the WordPress Zurich Meetup as well as WordCamp Switzerland 2014 and 2015.

He built his first website and began blogging as a 12-year-old in 2006. He started blogging about WordPress in 2008.

Besides his studies and volunteering with the Core Team, Pascal works at required, a UX and WordPress Agency.

As an active member of the WordPress Community, he knows about the importance of giving something back.

Pascal is a committer to the WordPress core and is the lead for the upcoming 4.7.4 release.

WordPress Community Interview With Francesca Marano

Francesca Marano is a WordPress professional, community junkie, author, educator. She enjoys speaking/attending WordCamps and Meetups.

She is the founder of the website C+B, a blog for Italian female creative entrepreneurs, with an editorial staff of more than 50 professionals offering advice to women who work on their own. The website has 40,000 readers.

Francesca is a Deputy with the Community Team and helps mentor people in their efforts to organize WordCamps and Meetups.

She is also one of the organizers of WordCamp Torino and is active in the WordPress Torino Meetup group.

There is some lag between the audio and video. I tried to fix it but I was just making it worse.

WordCamp Video Highlight 2017/03/10

On March 1st, Bridget Willard of the Marketing Team made a call to action and asked for Meetup Video Testimonials.

“Can you take a few moments to record a video testimonial with one of the attendees at each of your meetups? Nothing fancy, no special cameras, microphones or glaring lights. Just a camera phone and a good, honest story that will inspire others as they search for how to use WordPress for their own projects.”

In just a few days three videos testimonials have been published on WordPress TV.

This video is interesting in that hearing impaired people who participated in the WordCamp San Jose 2016 and 2017 meetups gave testimonies.

Another member of the Marketing Team, Dave Navarro, says that impromptu videos are best.

“I work for a TV and Radio station in the midwest and I can tell you, from experience, that unpolished raw video has more of an impact on most people in social media than polished professional video.”

With all of the devices that are available to record video, don’t be afraid to take a few minutes to shoot testimonials and upload to WordPress TV.

 

 

 

WordPress Community Interview With Jenny Beaumont

Jenny Beaumont is a multicultural, multidisciplinary maker and writer of things. She is a leader of people and of projects, who values communication above all else as a means to successful collaboration.

Jenny and Paolo Belcastro, are the co-organizers of WordCamp Europe. She is the team lead of the local WordPress Community.

We chat about the upcoming WordCamp Europe and the WordPress Community in France.

The call for volunteers and speakers has been closed but applications for a host city for WordCamp Europe 2018 is open until March 15th. Also, as of today, Sunday March 5th, there are 500 tickets remaining.

Jenny also talks about WordCamp Bordeaux which is taking place on March 18th. She is giving a presentation titled Zen and the Art of Contribution.

Two of the most frequent contributors of How To videos are denisco and Jose Fremaint.

How To Add Additional CSS To Your WordPress Theme

Jose talks about adding CSS to you theme and the benefits of doing so.

If you are interested in submitting a How To video, please feel free. Most computers have the ability to record screencast. A decent microphone completes the setup. There are plenty of of open source video editing programs available. Check the WordPress TV Submission Guidelines for details.

WordPress Community Interview With Luca Sartoni

Luca is Protector of Asynchronicity at Automattic, currently based in Vienna Austria. He is a media professional with more than a decade of technical and marketing expertise. Thanks to his extensive experience in business environments ranging from SMEs to large corporate projects, Luca helps companies scale up by implementing data-driven strategies.

Luca is an organizer for  WordCamp Europe 2017 and is leading the Volunteer Team, which comprises of 7 people. They are expected to have over 250 people volunteer for this event. Have you heard of ‘herding cats?’

We talk abut the several different roles that volunteers fill for this huge event.

Luca also talks about the Code or Conduct, which is a tool for WordCamp organizers to use to outlines the expectations for participant behavior as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior.

Luca has some great tips on how to be the perfect volunteer at the 16:50 mark.

Child Themes

Even though this is a slow time of the year as far as videos being submitted, there is still a lot of great content that is worth mentioning.

This week we are going to feature two videos that discuss Child Themes. If you have been involved in WordPress for even a short amount of time, you have heard the benefits of using a child theme. You can read an article from the WordPress Codex here.

Nick Adams: Getting Started with Child Themes

At WordCamp Montreal Nick explains what child themes are and why they should be used. He then shows how to create a child theme using both a plugin as well as manually creating a new directory and putting in a custom style.css and functions.php file.

Torsten Landsiedel: The Child-Theme-Dilemma

From WordCamp Milano, Torsten has a presentation talk for people who don’t want to be a beginner any longer and need to be intermediates. Including a plugin solution.

WordPress Community Interview With Isabelle Garcia

Isabelle Garcia is a front-end web developer and social media geek. She is a “Digital Nomad” and travels the world working remotely. She has no fixed base, no office. Isabelle likes to frequent local libraries, not to borrow books but to take advantage of the quiet atmosphere. While other digital nomads meet at coffee shops or co-working spaces, she likes to spend entire days and even weekends in the common areas and desks of public libraries.

When I first contacted Isabelle, she was starting a new adventure she called #WCAsiaRoadTrip. She was going to spend 2 or 3 months traveling through Asia and attend WordCamps at Udaipur, Pune and Bangkok.

Isabelle records video interviews at WordCamps which she then uploads to YouTube. She uses the VINUBIS Video Editor Plugin to edit her videos.

She likes to give back to the WordPress Community by taking part in Translation events with the Polyglots Team.
