American surgeons have successfully performed a face transplant on a man who shot himself in the jaw in a failed suicide bid. Andy Sandness, 31, from Wyoming, had the 56-hour operation at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota last year, 10 years after failing to take his life. He was first allowed to see his new face in June after three weeks of recovery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and his first response was to write down, 'far exceeded my expectations'. His friend of a decade, Dr Samir Mardini, who led the surgical team, told him that 'You don't know how happy that makes us feel'. His new face once belonged to 21-year-old father-to-be, Calen Ross, who shot himself before his wedding in June.
