In music, the subdominant is the technical name for the fourth tonal degree of the diatonic scale. It is so called because it is the same distance "below" the tonic as the dominant is above the tonic - in other words, the tonic is the dominant of the subdominant. It also happens to be the note immediately "below" the dominant. It is sung as fa in solfege. In the C major scale (white keys on a piano, starting on C), the subdominant is the note F; and the subdominant chord uses the notes F, A, and C. In music theory, Roman numerals are used to symbolize the subdominant chord as 'IV' if it is within the major mode (because it is a major triad, for example F-A-C in C major) or 'iv' if it is within the minor mode (because it is a minor triad, for example F-A♭-C in C minor).
Because ii6, ii6
5, and neapolitan sixth chords contain the fourth scale degree in the bass, they are also considered subdominant harmonies because they substitute for the same harmonic purpose as chords built on the fourth scale degree.

Yet another one of Chopin's late great works -- something so radical, structurally and harmonically, that it really takes a lot of time to detect that this piece is a masterwork: the key changes are wild and misleading, the structure is bewildering and deceptive, the melodies are beautiful but have the Medtnerian quality (very rare in Chopin) of seeming trite until the 5th listen or so. I don't have space to comment properly on this piece, but I think it helps to see this as a rough A-B-A structure, with *very* misleading transitions, preceded by one of the best introductions every conceived. Something like this: [Introduction: note the boldness of the modulations and their recurrence] [A: Theme 1 -- "Polonaise", Ab major] [A: A pretty sick modulatory passage -- E major, etc] [A: Theme 1...

As it is associated with a 500.000 deaths each year, breast cancer engenders a high burden. Rather than continue to add to the mounting costs of incidence and recurrence, we believe that we should reposition ourselves and advance promising, affordable, safe strategies for the primary and secondary prevention. Vaccination has been one of the most successful approaches to reduce mortality rates of infectious diseases and more recently cancer. The best approach is to target aberrantly expressed ‘self’ antigens that contribute to the pathogenesis. While targeting of self antigens implies breaking tolerance and causing autoimmunity, this is rarely observed. The reasons for the lack of autoimmunity are not clear, but according to our hypothesis, significant vaccine-induced responses are gener...
L.V.BEETHOVEN: piano concerto no°1 - Krystian ZIMERMAN ; WIENER PHILHARMONIKER From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15, was written during 1796 and 1797. Dedicated to his pupil Countess of Bratislava, Anna Louise Barbara ("Babette") Keglevics, its first performance was in Prague in 1798, with Beethoven himself playing the piano. Although this was Beethoven's first piano concerto to be published, it was, in fact, his third attempt at the genre, following an unpublished piano concerto in E-flat major (not to be confused with Beethoven's more famous "Emperor" concerto, also in E-flat) and the Piano Concerto No. 2, published after Piano Concerto No. 1 (in 1801) but composed almost ten years earlier. As with the Piano Concerto No....
One of the most introspective and moving sets of piano miniatures of the Romantic period. The Op.118 pieces feature the thematic density and contrapuntal mastery that typifies Brahms, and these two recordings, full of depth and imagination, are rightly recognised as benchmark performances. [Descriptions below] The first Intermezzo in A minor is written in a highly condensed sonata form, and yet retains a harmonic restlessness than indicates that this is merely the first piece in a set. (Note the initial feint towards F in the opening, before the D# apparently heralds the real tonality of A minor before yet again sidestepping to C major to close the opening section. The second is a sort-of-nocturne in broad ternary form, and one of Brahms' most lyrical sections. In the outer sections, it...
- Composer: Franz Peter Schubert (31 January 1797 -- 19 November 1828) - Performer: Grigori Sokolov - Year of recording: 2005 (Live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands) Piano Sonata No. 20 in A major, D. 959, written in 1828. 00:00 - I. Allegro 16:26 - II. Andantino 26:00 - III. Scherzo: Allegro vivace -- Trio: Un poco più lento 31:48 - IV. Rondo: Allegretto -- Presto This is Schubert's penultimate piano sonata, written in September 1828—about three months before his death. It is one of three that he wrote after the death of Beethoven (19 March 1827), whose funeral he attended with Hummel. The passing of this great master was an important event in the life of Schubert, for though mourned the loss of the musician he greatly admired, he also perhaps felt somewhat liberated from the older compos...
- Composer: Paul Hindemith (16 November 1895 -- 28 December 1963) - Performers: Danish String Quartet - Year of recording: 1995 String Quartet No. 1 in C major, Op. 2, written in 1914-1915. 00:00 - I. Sehr lebhaft 11:02 - II. Adagio 22:22 - III. Scherzo. Sehr lebhaft 28:44 - IV. Ziemlich lebhaft In his 1st string quartet, Hindemith (who was only nineteen years old) was trying to stand firm against the most highly challenging requirements of chamber music composition. Both musically and stylistically the music is based on a Brahmsian late-Romanticism, which would have been imparted to him by his second composition teacher at the Hoch Conservatory, Bernhard Sekles. Hindemith was concerned with extending and reshaping the traditional forms, which he favored, but without rendering them unr...
The Les Adieaux is one of the great works from Beethoven’s middle period, and is notable for several reasons. For a start, it’s Beethoven’s only explicitly programmatic sonata; the three movements are labelled The Farewell, The Absence, and The Return respectively. The first movement is bound by an aching motif; the second is full of painful suspensions and diminished 7th chords, and the last movement is an explosion of joy. There’s also the fact (too little remarked-upon) that the last movement really is a Concerto for Solo Piano, with many passages that might as well be flagged “tutti” (see 11:10, for instance, which features the sort of writing you’ll see in orchestral transcriptions for piano, or 11:17, when the piano joins the orchestra with a brilliant solo part), virtuoso passages ...
