Fast moving grass fire east of Queanbeyan puts area on watch and act

The NSW Rural Fire Service has told residents in the Widgiewa Road area in Carwoola to watch and act as a fast moving grass fire burns east of Queanbeyan towards Whiskers Hill.

NSWRFS spokesperson Paul Best said people in the Widgiewa Road area should obey all instructions from fire fighters, with five trucks already in attendance and firefighting aircraft on the way.

There is currently a total fire ban in the ACT and immediate NSW region, with a severe fire warning in place as Canberra expects a 35 degree high.

The ACT ESA were helping the NSW Rural Fire Service contain the blaze.

They had sent a task force to the site that included three water tankers, two light units and a pair of bush fire helicopters that would work in tandem.

A spokesman for the ESA said the fire, which was travelling in an eastbound direction, did not pose any threat to the ACT.

More to come.
