Two drivers have miraculously escaped injury after a motorbike and four-wheel-drive caught fire on the Monash Freeway.

The fiery crash at Mulgrave forced the closure of all outbound lanes on the freeway, bringing traffic to a halt on Friday afternoon.

The fire has been extinguished and two lanes have since re-opened.

Two outbound lanes remain closed.

Traffic has slowed to a crawl for more than 10 kilometres from Jacksons Road back to Bourke Road.

The collision happened near Jacksons Road just before 4pm.

Large flames engulfed the 4WD, with the motorcycle trapped underneath.

The motorcycle rider suffered only minor injuries and the 4WD driver was unharmed.

Motorists have been warned to avoid the area if possible, or allow for extra time.

More to come.
