History

Mitchelton is an area with a long history – its name comes from the family of one of the first settlers in the area, the Mitchell's who emigrated from England in the 1850s. Nicolas Mitchell purchased an estate he named "Mitchelton" in 1875, and the area was subdivided in the 1890s.

The famous monastery at St Vincent’s Care Services Mitchelton was originally the Redemptorist monastery of St Joseph, founded in 1926. St Joseph’s Villa was blessed by the Most Revered John Bathersby D.D., Archbishop of Brisbane, and officially opened by Mr Arch Bevis M.P., Member for Brisbane, on 29 May 1993. On the same day, the Oxford Park Retirement Village was blessed by the Most Reverend John J. Gerry D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Brisbane and Vicar for Social Response. On 13 August 1995, the Most Reverend John J. Gerry D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Brisbane and Vicar for Social Response blessed and officially opened Madonna Villa.

In 1997, St Vincent’s Care Services had taken over management of aged care facilities across Brisbane, including Gympie, Enoggera, Bardon and Mitchelton. In 2000, the Mitchelton site underwent a transfer of ownership from the Archdiocese to St Vincent’s Care Services (then known as Mount Olivet Community Services), along with the other Brisbane facilities.
