A monsoon trough and embedded tropical low is causing heavy rain and storms in the topics, particularly in the NT's Gulf of Carpentaria. A trough extending across from WA to NSW is triggering storms, some severe. A cold front to the southeast is bringing gusty showers.

The Southern Oscillation Index, or SOI, gives an indication of the development and intensity of El Niño or La Niña events in the Pacific Ocean.

El Niño is typically associated with lower than average rainfall, while La Niña is associated with above average rainfall.
