Support Family Violence Leave for all workers

dv_header.jpg

We have a family violence crisis on our hands in Australia. Men, women and children, of all races and classes, are being abused and murdered by trusted partners or family members in shocking numbers, with women bearing the brunt of this violence.

To make sure that everyone who needs help can get it, we all need to play our part - and that includes employers.

Sign the petition to show your support for paid family violence leave, and tell employers to step up.

Right now in Australia, employers are shirking their duty of care to employees experiencing family violence. Despite community pressure, many employers are still denying people experiencing family violence the time they need to attend doctors’ appointments and court dates.

That’s why union members are asking the Fair Work Commission and Governments to give people subjected to family violence a minimum of ten paid days away from work.

It is the responsibility of our whole community to end family violence, and to support people experiencing violence right now.

Employers say that this is a 'private issue' rather than something we must tackle as a society. They even argue that we should have to trade off other work rights to get it! They are refusing to step up and help to end this crisis.
Survivors have suffered for too long behind closed doors.

We all have a part to play in ending violence: it’s time that employers played theirs.

Tell employers everyone has the right to feel safe at work, and everyone should have the right to paid days away from work if they are subjected to family violence.

Is this a serious petition? Do people actually think that the people who employ them should be responsible for footing the bill for their personal life choices?

Family and domestic violence affects workers and businesses. Paid leave gives workers the ability to organise somewhere to live, attend court, liaise with schools etc. It gives employers the ability to manage the impact on their businesses, reduce unplanned leave, lost productivity and the costs of losing staff. It’s not gender specific and the ACTU submission proposes that employers be able to ask for evidence that the leave is needed. It’s really a win/win. Of course it would be great if no one ever needed it but that’s not the world we live in.

I’ll do my best Nai Brooks. I have been working in Community services for nearly twenty years now. And i’m only 32 years old. I’m a kinder teacher plus I work at the Royal Melbourne hospital plus I volunteer with a refugee female health group. Teaching children how to respect each other is the hardest job but the most rewarding.

As a male victim of family violence (my ex wife pleaded guilty through her lawyer in court having been charged with assault) I see absolutely no justification to give time off. Indeed, it may rather escalate the claims of family violence with dud claims just to get time off. As a senior citizen I view the loss of respect toward the rights of a partner is the real issue. Family violence knows no gender boundaries and what we need is to start educating our children to be respectful to each other so that when they grow up they will not befall the disrespect todays society suffers from. It also may reduce the bullying.

Are you serious? Why don’t we just ask the government to make sure family violence doesn’t happen in the first place! this is a joke-society is a fricken joke! I guess some people just enjoy family violence too much. Some even profit off it!
