Firefighters have told residents near the Widgiewa Road, Whiskers Creek Road, Yilgarn Road and Captains Flat Road area it is too late to leave as an out-of-control grass fire continues to burn.

The affected residents have been urged to seek shelter now as the fast moving fire burns east of Queanbeyan towards Whiskers Hill.

On Friday afternoon, ABC reported one house had been lost in the fire.

The NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman Paul Best said affected residents in the area should obey all instructions from fire fighters, with five trucks already in attendance as firefighting aircraft assisted crews on the ground.

The fire has crossed Widgiewa Road and Whiskers Creek Road and is moving in an easterly direction towards Captains Flat Road.

Evacuation centres were being set up and school children travelling on buses would be redirected to the Q Theatre in Queanbeyan.

There is currently a total fire ban in the ACT and immediate NSW region, with a severe fire warning in place as Canberra expects a 35 degree high.

The ACT ESA were helping the NSW Rural Fire Service contain the blaze.

They had sent a task force to the site that included three water tankers, two light units and a pair of bushfire helicopters that would work in tandem.

A spokesman for the ESA said the fire, which was travelling in an eastbound direction, did not pose any threat to the ACT.

NSW fire crews were also battling a fire in Blayney, west of Bathurst on Friday afternoon.
