On this week's adventure Coyote is getting the chance to walk the grounds of the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM) with Curator of Animal Experiences Will Bruner.
From species ambassadors like the Mountain Lion to the Desert Bighorn Sheep the ASDM is home to a plethora of animal species!
Located in Tucson Mountain Park, and founded in 1952, the ASDM is one of the top zoological societies and museums in the world and is the perfect place to visit if you want to get a look at all of the magnificent wildlife of the Southwest has to offer!

The Sonoran Desert is a North American desert which covers large parts of the Southwestern United States in Arizona and California, and of Northwestern Mexico in Sonora, Baja California and Baja California Sur. It is the hottest desert in North America, with an area of 280,000 square kilometers (110,000 sq mi). The western portion of the United States–Mexico border passes through the Sonoran Desert.
The largest city in the Sonoran Desert is Phoenix, Arizona, with a 2013 metropolitan population of about 4.3 million.
Humans have been living in this desert for thousands of years.
The Sonoran Desert is home to the cultures of over seventeen contemporary Native American tribes, some of those tribes are Pascua Yaqui (Yoeme), Seri, Tohono O'odham, Gila River Indian Community, and the Cocopah.

Sonoran Desert
The Sonoran Desert is a North American desert which covers large parts of the Southwestern United States in Arizona and California, and of Northwestern Mexico in Sonora, Baja California and Baja California Sur. It is the hottest desert in North America, with an area of 260,000 square kilometers (100,000 sq mi). The western portion of the United States–Mexico border passes through the Sonoran Desert.
In phytogeography, the Sonoran Desert is within the Sonoran Floristic Province of the Madrean Region in southwestern North America, part of the Holarctic Kingdom of the northern Western Hemisphere. The desert contains a variety of unique and endemic plants and animals, such as the Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) and Organ Pipe cactus (Stenocereus thurberi).
Location
The Sonoran desert wraps around the northern end of the Gulf of California, from Baja California Sur (El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve in central and Pacific west coast, Central Gulf Coast subregion on east to southern tip), north through much of Baja California, excluding the central northwest mountains and Pacific west coast, through southeastern California and southwestern and southern Arizona to western and central parts of Sonora.

Desert
A desert is a barren area of land where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life. The lack of vegetation exposes the unprotected surface of the ground to the processes of denudation. About one third of the land surface of the world is arid or semi-arid. This includes much of the polar regions where little precipitation occurs and which are sometimes called polar deserts or "cold deserts". Deserts can be classified by the amount of precipitation that falls, by the temperature that prevails, by the causes of desertification or by their geographical location.
Deserts are formed by weathering processes as large variations in temperature between day and night put strains on the rocks which consequently break in pieces. Although rain seldom occurs in deserts, there are occasional downpours that can result in flash floods. Rain falling on hot rocks can cause them to shatter and the resulting fragments and rubble strewn over the desert floor is further eroded by the wind. This picks up particles of sand and dust and wafts them aloft in sand or dust storms. Wind-blown sand grains striking any solid object in their path can abrade the surface. Rocks are smoothed down, and the wind sorts sand into uniform deposits. The grains end up as level sheets of sand or are piled high in billowing sand dunes. Other deserts are flat, stony plains where all the fine material has been blown away and the surface consists of a mosaic of smooth stones. These areas are known as desert pavements and little further erosion takes place. Other desert features include rock outcrops, exposed bedrock and clays once deposited by flowing water. Temporary lakes may form and salt pans may be left when waters evaporate. There may be underground sources of water in the form of springs and seepages from aquifers. Where these are found, oases can occur.

I start of my travel in Scottsdale visiting downtown, otherwise known as "Old Town," the very walkable central part of the city full of small shops and a booming restaurant scene. It is also here that the city's roots can be traced back to the original farmers and settlers that called this otherwise barren part of the desert home back in the early 1900's.
I then head east into Tonto National Park to go kayaking down the Salt River with Arizona Outback Adventures (AOA), the area's premiere outdoor adventure company.
Next, I visit Taliesin West, the school/winter home of America's most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Here I explore the unique structures and landscapes that make up Wright's real-world laboratory for he and his students' architectural ideas.
Then I head back into nature with AOA to go hiking in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a 30,000-acre preserve located just minutes from the city, and a perfect place to explore the unique landscape of the desert -- even when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees.
Last, I head inside and give a tour of my sweet pad at the Hotel Valley Ho, probably one of the coolest hotels I've ever stayed in. Harkening back to its Mid-Century roots, the hotel's unique architecture and swanky rooms makes it one of the premiere places to rest your head while staying in Scottsdale.

With little rainfall and average summer temperatures rising to over 110 degrees, desert plants must be extremely hardy to survive.
Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips tours the Living Desert botanical gardens in Palm Desert.
Let's take a look at some common desert plants and learn a few tips about drought tolerant desert landscaping.
Palm Springs is known for its tidy landscaped desert gardens, and I can't think of a better place to get new ideas and inspiration than at the Living Desert.
This peaceful and beautiful park is known for its showcase gardens of plants that grow in the Mojave, Colorado, Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts.
Walking along the gentle paths, you'll find specimens of barrel cactus, agave and yucca. Turn the corner and you'll find some mallow, cholla and prickly pear cactus. Many of these drought tolerant plants can go 2-3 months without water in the scorching desert heat.
My guide Glenn explained that one of the most amazing and useful desert plants is the fragrant creosote bush. Its leaves are used for healing by native Indians and its tangled roots as shelter by desert animals. If you are ever in the desert after a rainstorm, the smell of creosote is unmistakable.
At the Living Desert, you'll also find desert trees such as the Joshua Tree, Mesquite Tree and Escarpment Live Oak, while the Palm Garden features several hundred palm trees from around the world.
If you want to grow a hummingbird garden or butterfly garden, you'll find some great ideas here — and proof that they work.
At the Wortz Demonstration Garden, you'll find some great examples of Southwest landscape design, complete with beautiful gates, stonework, water fountains and rustic yard art.
On your way out, stop by the Palo Verde Garden Center. You can purchase a wide variety of unique cacti, succulents and other desert plants not found elsewhere in the state.
I hope this visit to the Living Desert has given you some insight into the beautiful plants and landscaping of our North American deserts.
