You're behind in the polls 54-46 and have no political capital left, might as well try changing things up and adopting some good policy.

Malcolm has become a shell of his former self. I would really like to know, on a personal level, if it was all worth it for him. History will no doubt be more kind on Tony Abbot than Malcolm Turnbull. His legacy is that of a compromised failure, a true moderate PM that could have been, but never was.

That "former self" was always an illusion, an image he crafted to make him appear a viable leader. What we see now is the real Turnbull, and has always been the real Turnbull. He's just finally in a position where image can't last, and as it falls away we see his true self. He desperately throws out ideas trying to find something popular, trying to craft new images, but never acts, and has never acted.

He doesn't deserve the kindness of pretending he was ever going to live up to the images he presented.

It's sad really.

"Look, obviously Malcolm did a deal to get there and the deal he did actually compromised some of the basic positions that he'd previously held and held publicly. There's a fellow running in the seat of Wentworth, my old seat, against Malcolm, who just wants the old Malcolm to come back. The guy that stood for gay marriage … and climate change and tax reform and so on. And I think that's been a major reason why his popularity has collapsed." - John Hewson
