A driver has died after crashing his friend's car into a tyre wall at Queensland Raceway at Willowbank, west of Brisbane.

The 68-year-old was racing at a closed mid-week meet when he failed to negotiate a bend and drove head-on into a tyre barrier about 2:30pm.

Paramedics performed CPR at the scene but were unable to revive him.

Inspector Keith McDonald said the cause of the crash would be looked into over the coming days.

"We are hoping that a post mortem [examination] tomorrow may provide further information into a possible cause," he said.

"Certainly the vehicle will be seized and taken away for mechanical examination and our forensic crash unit are conducting investigations into the matter in conjunction with workplace health and safety"

The car was an old red Ford Escort with a race cage and belonged to a friend who was with the man at the track.

Insp McDonald said it was unclear how fast the car was going, but they would look at any possible CCTV that may have been in the cars that were following.
