Zoltán Kodály (Hungarian: Kodály Zoltán, [ˈkodaːj ˈzoltaːn]; 16 December 1882 – 6 March 1967) was a Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, pedagogue, linguist, and philosopher. He is well known internationally as the creator of the Kodály Method.
Born in Kecskemét, Hungary, Kodály learned to play the violin as a child.
In 1905 he visited remote villages to collect songs, recording them on phonograph cylinders. In 1906 he wrote a thesis on Hungarian folk song, "Strophic Construction in Hungarian Folksong". At around this time Kodály met fellow composer and compatriot Béla Bartók, whom he took under his wing and introduced to some of the methods involved in folk song collecting. The two became lifelong friends and champions of each other's music.
All these works show great originality of form and content, a very interesting blend of highly sophisticated mastery of the western European style of music, including classical, late-romantic, impressionistic and modernist traditions, and on the other hand a profound knowledge and respect for the folk music of Hungary and the Hungarian-inhabited areas of Slovakia and Romania. Partly because of the Great War and subsequent major geopolitical changes in the region, and partly because of a naturally rather diffident temperament in youth, Kodály had no major public success until 1923. This was the year when one of his best-known pieces, Psalmus Hungaricus, was given its first performance at a concert to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the union of Buda and Pest (Bartók's Dance Suite premiered on the same occasion.)
Dances of Galánta (Galántai táncok) is a 1933 orchestral work by Zoltán Kodály.
The piece was composed on commission for the 80th anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic Society. It is based on folk music of Galanta (now part of Slovakia, where Kodály lived for several years.) The composer remarked: "At that time there existed a famous gypsy band...This was the first 'orchestral' sonority that came to the ears of the child...About 1800 some books of Hungarian dances were published in Vienna, one of which contained music 'after several Gypsies from Galánta'...the composer has taken his principal themes from these old publications". Most of the pieces used were of the verbunkos style – originally developed as military recruiting music, but generalizing to a Hungarian folk tradition in the early 1800s. Kodály saw the piece as a "sequel" to his 1927 piano suite Dances of Marosszék.
Dances of Galánta is in five sections, lasting a total of about 16 minutes. It is scored for two flutes, piccolo, two oboes, two clarinets in A, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, timpani, snare drum, glockenspiel, triangle, and string orchestra. The clarinet is particularly prominent, representing the traditional tárogató (a type of single-reed instrument).

This is the first general music lesson I taught to my college peers. This is not a perfect lesson, for I have made quite a few mistakes. This is a great start to perfecting my teaching though! This is lesson is Kodály based My mistakes I have caught: -Biggest one: The musical rhythms does not match to some of the rhythms we are actually singing (I learned the correct ones...) -I did not specify ti's to ta's -I became nervous, messed up on some solfège -Pitch accuracy was off when saying "Merrily...." -I was unsure of myself at times -I should not have done the second verse of the song. Next time, I will write the rhythms correlating to the song.
