Inside the Story: Bourke Street Tragedy

SUBSCRIBER EXCLUSIVE: State Editor Michelle Griffin recounts the events that unfolded in The Age newsroom on January 20, 2017.


 

It was as if a switch had been been flipped. One minute it was an ordinary sort of news day for a Friday, mostly operating in anticipation of the Trump inauguration. Then, just after 1.30pm, everything changed.

State political reporter Ben Preiss and photographer Justin McManus were at a press conference at Melbourne Town Hall that was cancelled just as it was about to begin, while police cars roared up Swanston Street.

Preiss rang the news desk just as education editor Henrietta Cook ran towards the news desk saying there was a big police chase up Bourke Street. Phones rang everywhere in the office.
