The insider’s guide to the Oscars, and why we already know who’s (probably) going to win

When you first hold an Academy Award in your hand, the most striking thing is that it seems both slimmer and taller than you would expect.

It gleams and it’s heavy, made of a solid bronze core cast and then electroplated in 24-karat gold.

About 50 are struck each year, the exact number depending on how many are handed out; of the 24 categories, many of the awards go to multiple recipients.

On the victories (and failures) of that army of little gold men pivots the multi-billion dollar film industry.

Careers are made, and broken, on the mixed fortunes of a man named “Oscar”.
