Sri Lanka (/sriːˈlɑːŋkə, -ˈlæŋkə/ or 
i/ʃriː-/;Sinhalese - ශ්රී ලංකාව, Tamil Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and known from the beginning of British colonial rule until 1972 as Ceylon (/sᵻˈlɒnˌ seɪ-ˌ siː-/), is an island country in South Asia near south-east India.
Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II.
A diverse and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages. In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, dates back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC. The country's recent history has been marred by a thirty-year civil war which decisively ended when Sri Lankan military defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009.

On 10th October, I flew SriLankan Airlines UL891 service from Hong Kong (HKG) to Bangkok (BKK). When I booked the ticket, it indicated that I was meant to be on the older A330-200 with lie-flat seats in a 2-2-2 arrangement. Just a week away from departure, I realised that my aircraft has changed to A330-300 with fully-flat seats in a 1-2-1 arrangement. SriLankan Airlines’ new business class is fascinating, pretty similar to the ones on Cathay Pacific and American Airlines. I had a great flight with them. The service was outstanding and the crew were very caring and friendly. HKG-BKK is one of the busiest international routes in the world. According to the International Monetary Fund, Sri Lanka's GDP in terms of purchasing power parity is second only to the Maldives in the South Asian region in terms of per capita income. Sri Lanka recorded a GDP growth of 8.3% in 2011.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Sri Lanka became a plantation economy, famous for its production and export of cinnamon, rubber and Ceylon tea, which remains a trademark national export. The development of modern ports under British rule raised the strategic importance of the island as a centre of trade. From 1948 to 1977 socialism strongly influenced the government's economic policies. Colonial plantations were dismantled, industries were nationalised and a welfare state established. In 1977 the Free market economy was introduced to the country, incorporating privatisation, deregulation and the promotion of private enterprise.
While the production and export of tea, rubber, coffee, sugar and other commodities remain important, industrialisation has increased the importance of food processing, textiles, telecommunications and finance. The country's main economic sectors are tourism, tea export, clothing, rice production and other agricultural products. In addition to these economic sectors, overseas employment, especially in the Middle East, contributes substantially in foreign exchange. As of 2010, the service sector makes up 60% of GDP, the industrial sector 28%, and the agriculture sector 12%. The private sector accounts for 85% of the economy. India is Sri Lanka's largest trading partner. Economic disparities exist between the provinces, with the Western province contributing 45.1% of the GDP and the Southern province and the Central province contributing 10.7% and 10%, respectively. With the end of the war, the Northern province reported a record 22.9% GDP growth in 2010.
The per capita income of Sri Lanka has doubled since 2005. During the same period, poverty has dropped from 15.2% to 7.6%, unemployment rate has dropped from 7.2% to 4.9%, market capitalisation of Colombo Stock Exchange has quadrupled and budget deficit has doubled. Over 90% of the households in Sri Lanka are electrified. 87.3% of the population have access to safe drinking water and 39% have access to pipe-borne water. Income inequality has also dropped in recent years, indicated by a gini coefficient of 0.36 in 2010. Sri Lanka's cellular subscriber base has shown a staggering 550% growth, from 2005 to 2010. Sri Lanka was the first country in the South Asian region to introduce 3G, 3.5G HSDPA, 3.75G HSUPA and 4G LTE mobile broadband Internet technologies.
The Global Competitiveness Report, published by the World Economic Forum, has described Sri Lanka's economy as transitioning from the factor-driven stage to the efficiency-driven stage, and that it ranks 52nd in global competitiveness. Also, out of the 142 countries surveyed, Sri Lanka ranked 45th in health and primary education, 32nd in business sophistication, 42nd in innovation, and 41st in goods market efficiency. Sri Lanka ranks 8th in the World Giving Index, registering high levels of contentment and charitable behaviour in its society. In 2010, The New York Times placed Sri Lanka at the top of its list of 31 places to visit. The Dow Jones classified Sri Lanka as an emerging market in 2010, and Citigroup classified it as a 3G country in February 2011. Sri Lanka ranks well above other South Asian countries in the Human Development Index (HDI) with 0.750 points.

On 10th October, I flew SriLankan Airlines UL891 service from Hong Kong (HKG) to Bangkok (BKK). When I booked the ticket, it indicated that I was meant to be on the older A330-200 with lie-flat seats in a 2-2-2 arrangement. Just a week away from departure, I realised that my aircraft has changed to A330-300 with fully-flat seats in a 1-2-1 arrangement. SriLankan Airlines’ new business class is fascinating, pretty similar to the ones on Cathay Pacific and American Airlines. I had a great flight with them. The service was outstanding and the crew were very caring and friendly. HKG-BKK is one of the busiest international routes in the world. There are more than 30 flights flying between HKG and BKK each day. Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, Thai Airways, SriLankan Airlines, Emirates, Kenya Airlines and Royal Jordanian Airlines are some of the airlines that fly between the cities. HKG-BKK is one of the few routes that all three alliances (Oneworld, Star Alliance, Skyteam) operate.

The growth in members and of the Sri Lankan population at MSU allows the organization to expand their presence within the community. The food festival gave students a chance to have a taste of Sri Lankan culture. Students can look forward to learning more about Sri Lanka and its culture through future events and projects the organization plans to have.

The food festival gave students a chance to have a taste of Sri Lankan culture. Students can look forward to learning more about Sri Lanka and its culture through future events and projects the organization plans to have.

Jaffna is the northern capital of the Tamil area of Sri Lanka. Not long ago it was the center of the Sri Lankan civil war, but today Jaffna remains safe to visit as a tourist.
Jaffna town (யாழ்ப்பாணம்) is full of rich Tamil culture, a great place to hit the streets are explore the local food and flavors of town.
During this Jaffna travel video I walk around on Beach Road, eat a delicious Sri Lankan food breakfast of paratha bread and pol sambol (coconut garnish), check out the Jaffna Fort, walk past countless old building ruins, take a chaotic walk straight through the center of Jaffna town, eat a sour Jaffna mango, visit Nallur Kovil Hindu Temple for a 4pm traditional ceremony, dine on traditional local style Tamil Jaffna food, and finally taste for the first time a cup of thick wood apple juice!
Jaffna town (யாழ்ப்பாணம்) is an amazing town with a rich history and a very interesting culture. There are many things to do in Jaffna and a lot of places to see.

Abstract: Sri Lanka, popularly perceived through the contrasting images of a bitter civil war or a beautiful tourist destination, presents yet a third image - an exemplar of how to achieve good health at a low cost. Dr Jones' presentation will analyse the Sri Lankan experience of primary health care from the late colonial period to the Alma--Ata declaration, uncovering how this accolade was achieved and the questions it raises.
Sri Lanka's good model of selective primary health care, available through the government health system, formed a sound basis for providing universal health coverage. It is now questionable whether the system will continue to provide affordable care to address the increasing burden of chronic diseases. Dr Perera will discuss the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health's investigation of how the existing primary health, structure together with specialist services, can be reformed to provide universal health access and maintain a safety net for healthcare.

The Hill Capital of Kandy was the last bastion of the Sinhala kings and is a charming city offering a living record of a magnificent past and is set around an attractive man-made lake in scenic hill country. It is also the site of Sri Lanka’s greatest annual spectacle, the Esala Perahera festival in August, also known as the Festival of the Moon when thousands of people from all parts of the country and from foreign countries throng to the Hill Capital to witness the magnificent spectacle.
Sigiriya
Located atop a rock plateau overlooking verdant jungle and a vast plain is Sigiriya, the mysterious remains of the 5th-century fortress of King Kasyapa. These ruins of Sigiriya are the most unique of the ancient sites in Sri Lanka. Be sure to brave the rickety-looking spiral staircase to see the awesome 1500-year old painted frescoes located beneath an overhang about 90m up the rock. This archaeological site, unparalleled in South Asia, is a place of pilgrimage for Sri Lankans and has been declared a World Heritage Site.
Nuwara Eliya
Sri Lanka’s cool hill country offers a welcome antidote to the heat of the coast and low-lying plains. Situated amongst verdant tea plantations and at an elevation of 1990 m, Nuwara Eliya is one of the highest and most attractive towns in Sri Lanka’s hill region. Built by English tea growers, it remained their favourite hill station during colonial times. Nuwara Eliya boasts the best golf course in Sri Lanka and is home to the impressive Hakgala Botanical Gardens.

For my forth country of the year, I flew over to Sri Lanka, starting in the capital, Colombo. After a day on the road, I found myself in the stunning surroundings of Dambulla, where I wasted no time in trekking the Sri Lankan jungle. We then spent some time in Sigiriya, relaxing in the Jetwing hotel and seeing elephants on safari! After another long journey up to the North of the country, we spent a week on the beaches of Trincomalee, where we saw dolphins, whales and I indulged in a spot of jetskiing. But before going home, I had to experience one of the most famous Sri Lankan delicacies, it's tea, in Kandy. Day 1: Bandaranaike Airport to Kandy
Day 2-4: We stayed in Kandy and visited the Temple of the Tooth, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Sygiria (this was a day trip).
Day 5: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and did White Water Rafting at Kitulgala (AM) vistited the Blue Field Tea Factory (PM) enroute.
Day 6: Nuwara Eliya to Ella. We woke up early to walk on the Horton Plains and see World's End before continuing our journey by train in the Observation Car to Ella (I highly recommend this trip!).
Day 7: Ella to Yala National Park with a safari in the afternoon.
Day 8: Yala to Tangalla
Day 8-10: Beach in Tangalla
Day 11: Tangalla to Mirissa
Day 12: Mirissa to Unawatuna
Day 13-14: Unawatuna
Day 15: Unawatuna to Galle
Day 16: Fly Home!
