To celebrate International Mother Language Day, we made a video that envisions an America where people do not speak a common language and the complications that ensues.
Just within the embassy in Oslo, twenty-four different languages are spoken (and this is not counting our IT person who insists he speaks Klingon.) The languages range from Icelandic to Farsi, from Tagalog to Cap Verdean, and illustrate the diversity of the Embassy, the United States and Norway.

With the world now seen as a global village, English has grown to become a language of choice connecting nations across the world. Rwanda, one of the largest Francophone countries in Eastern and Central Africa is slowly switching to English as its official national language from the traditional French. The English language is now fast being used as a tool for businesses and opportunities. And as Brenda Cheruiyot reports, the switch that started in 2008 has seen the country make dramatic steps in integrating English in the education system to enable it be at par with other East African countries.

Pakistan's top court has directed the government to Introduce Urdu as an official language and do away with existing official communications in English within its ranks and files. English has been an official language for decades in Pakistan where more than 95 percent people speak Urdu.
Almost everybody reads and writes Urdu in this 200 million populated Muslim country. Nonetheless, English has been an official language since Pakistan gained independence from Britain in 1947. Therefore, hardly three to five percent English speaking class get all kind of executive jobs in the government and private sector.

Official language
An official language is a language that is given a special legal status in a particular country, state, or other jurisdiction. Typically a country's official language refers to the language used within government (e.g., courts, parliament, administration).
