The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

African Union peacekeeping troops from Chad have clashed with demonstrators in the Central African Republic, near the airport in the capital Bangui.
According to protesters, one person was killed but that has not been confirmed.
The medical charity Medecins sans Frontières said about 40 people were treated for injuries, most of whom had been slightly hurt in a stampede as people panicked.
The clashes are complicating international efforts to calm inter-religious violence in large landlocked state, where France has deployed 1,600 troops to protect civilians.
Despite French pleas for the crowd to disperse, many among the capital's majority Christian population accuse the troops from neighbouring Chad of siding with Muslim rebels.
One handwritten banner read "yes to France", "no" to the Chadian force.
The Muslims from Seleka took power in a coup in March, installing their own interim head of state. Chadian peacekeepers were accused of standing aside.
In the latest clash witnesses said they reacted to stones being thrown by firing into the air - and the crowd.
In other developments, the European Union has banned the export of arms to the Central African Republic and mercenaries from being sent to the country.

U.N.: Soldiers from Chad killed civilians in neighboring Central African Republic
Soldiers from Chad entered a market in the Central African Republic capital of Bangui last week, killed about 30 civilians, wounded another 300 and returned to Chad, according to preliminary findings by the United Nations Human Rights Office.
The incident reflected the growing complexity of the situation in the Central African Republic, a former French colony plunged into chaos last year after a coalition of mostly Muslim rebels ousted President Francois Bozize.
They have since been forced out of power, but Christian and Muslim militias continue to battle for control.
Human rights investigators said the March 29 incident began when Chadian national army soldiers entered Bangui in a convoy of several military pick-up trucks.
They entered a crowded market where shoppers included women and children, and opened fire, a U.N. report said Friday.
"As panic-stricken people fled in all directions, the soldiers allegedly continued firing indiscriminately," said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N.'s office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
"Several sources told the investigating team that they believed the Chadian force had entered Bangui to extract remaining Chadians and other Muslim inhabitants in order to save them from further attacks by (Christian militias)," Colville said.
The U.N. said the soldiers who were responsible for the Bangui attack were Chadian soldiers but not among those who are part of the African-led International Support Mission peacekeeping mission that's trying to stabilize the Central African Republic.
"It seems they have gone straight back to Chad without being apprehended," Colville said of the attackers.
About 850 Chadian soldiers are part of the 6,000-strong peacekeeping presence, but on Thursday, Chad's foreign ministry issued a statement saying the country planned to withdraw its troops from the force, according to CNN French affiliate BFMTV.
"Despite the sacrifices we have made, Chad and Chadians have been targeted in a gratuitous and malicious campaign that blamed them for all the suffering in (Central African Republic)," said a statement from Chad's foreign ministry.

i/tʃæd/; Arabic: تشاد Tshād; French: Tchad), officially the Republic of Chad (Arabic: جمهورية تشاد Jumhūrīyat Tshād; French: République du Tchad), is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest and Niger to the west. It is the fifth largest country in Africa in terms of area.
Chad has several regions: a desert zone in the north, an arid Sahelian belt in the centre and a more fertile Sudanian Savanna zone in the south. Lake Chad, after which the country is named, is the largest wetland in Chad and the second-largest in Africa. N'Djamena, the capital, is the largest city. Chad is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. Arabic and French are the official languages. Islam and Christianity are the most widely practiced religions.
Beginning in the 7th millennium BC, human populations moved into the Chadian basin in great numbers. By the end of the 1st millennium BC, a series of states and empires rose and fell in Chad's Sahelian strip, each focused on controlling the trans-Saharan trade routes that passed through the region. France conquered the territory by 1920 and incorporated it as part of French Equatorial Africa. In 1960, Chad obtained independence under the leadership of François Tombalbaye. Resentment towards his policies in the Muslim north culminated in the eruption of a long-lasting civil war in 1965. In 1979, the rebels conquered the capital and put an end to the south's hegemony. However, the rebel commanders fought amongst themselves until Hissène Habré defeated his rivals. He was overthrown in 1990 by his general Idriss Déby. Since 2003, the Darfur crisis in Sudan has spilt over the border and destabilised the nation, with hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees living in and around camps in eastern Chad.

The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

African Union peacekeeping troops from Chad have clashed with demonstrators in the Central African Republic, near the airport in the capital Bangui.
According to protesters, one person was killed but that has not been confirmed.
The medical charity Medecins sans Frontières said about 40 people were treated for injuries, most of whom had been slightly hurt in a stampede as people panicked.
The clashes are complicating international efforts to calm inter-religious violence in large landlocked state, where France has deployed 1,600 troops to protect civilians.
Despite French pleas for the crowd to disperse, many among the capital's majority Christian population accuse the troops from neighbouring Chad of siding with Muslim rebels.
One handwritten banner read "yes to France", "no" to the Chadian force.
The Muslims from Seleka took power in a coup in March, installing their own interim head of state. Chadian peacekeepers were accused of standing aside.
In the latest clash witnesses said they reacted to stones being thrown by firing into the air - and the crowd.
In other developments, the European Union has banned the export of arms to the Central African Republic and mercenaries from being sent to the country.

The incident reflected the growing complexity of the situation in the Central African Republic, a former French colony plunged into chaos last year after a coalition of mostly Muslim rebels ousted President Francois Bozize.
They have since been forced out of power, but Christian and Muslim militias continue to battle for control.
Human rights investigators said the March 29 incident began when Chadian national army soldiers entered Bangui in a convoy of several military pick-up trucks.
They entered a crowded market where shoppers included women and children, and opened fire, a U.N. report said Friday.
"As panic-stricken people fled in all directions, the soldiers allegedly continued firing indiscriminately," said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N.'s office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
"Several sources told the investigating team that they believed the Chadian force had entered Bangui to extract remaining Chadians and other Muslim inhabitants in order to save them from further attacks by (Christian militias)," Colville said.
The U.N. said the soldiers who were responsible for the Bangui attack were Chadian soldiers but not among those who are part of the African-led International Support Mission peacekeeping mission that's trying to stabilize the Central African Republic.
"It seems they have gone straight back to Chad without being apprehended," Colville said of the attackers.
About 850 Chadian soldiers are part of the 6,000-strong peacekeeping presence, but on Thursday, Chad's foreign ministry issued a statement saying the country planned to withdraw its troops from the force, according to CNN French affiliate BFMTV.
"Despite the sacrifices we have made, Chad and Chadians have been targeted in a gratuitous and malicious campaign that blamed them for all the suffering in (Central African Republic)," said a statement from Chad's foreign ministry.

King Tut’s tomb was first discovered by British Egyptologists Howard Carter and George Herbert in 1922. What stunned many at the time was the solid Gold coffin. Inside were the remains of a pharaoh who, to that date, had been relatively unknown and lost to the history of the world.

entral African leaders, led by Chad's Idriss Deby, have run out of patience with Djotodia after months of looting and killing in the poor, landlocked nation since his Muslim Seleka
rebels seized power in March. Nearly 1 million people have been displaced by clashes between Seleka and the mostly Christian anti-balaka militia, according to the United Nations, threatening a humanitarian crisis. French and African Union peacekeepers have struggled to restore order in a country the size of France.
Ahmat Allami, the secretary-general of the 10-nation Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), said the members of the Central African Republic's National Transitional Council (CNT) had been flown in at short notice to the Chadian capital N'Djamena to decide the leadership of their nation.
"No-one can speak on behalf of the Central Africans. That's why we have asked the CNT and representatives of political parties to come to N'Djamena to decide on the future of the transitional institutions," Allami said. The closed-door summit talks were suspended pending their arrival and would restart on Friday, he said.
A majority of the CNT's 135 members arrived in N'Djamena on a Chadian government aircraft late on Thursday, together with leading members of the opposition.
Under an agreement brokered by regional powers last year, the CNT is charged with choosing a transitional leader to take Central African Republic to elections, due at the end of this
year. It formally elected Djotodia to his position as interim president in April.
A senior political source in Bangui said the CNT had been summoned to formalise Djotodia's departure on Friday. A spokesman for Djotodia on Wednesday denied reports that Djotodia would resign at the summit or shortly afterwards on his return to Bangui. He was not immediately available to comment on the latest developments.
Opening Thursday's summit, Chad's Deby had appealed to the international community for help in tackling a crisis which threatened to engulf the whole region. He said Chad had already
been forced to evacuate 18,000 of its citizens. France, which deployed 1,600 troops to its former colony in early December under a U.N. mandate to help restore order, sent observers to the summit.
Asked on Thursday if Djotodia's resignation would facilitate peace, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told France 2 TV:"As far as the political transition goes and the fact the state
is paralysed, there are certainly decisions to be taken and we shall see what our Africa friends decide."
"It is not France's place to dictate decisions. We're here to give support," he added.

In which John Green teaches you about what westerners call the middle ages and the lives of the aristocracy...in Japan. The Heian period in Japan lasted from 794CE to 1185CE, and it was an interesting time in Japan. Rather than being known for a thriving economy, or particularly interesting politics, the most important things to come out of the Heian period were largely cultural. There was a flourishing of art and literature in the period, and a lot of that culture was created by women. The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu was the classic piece of literature of the day, and it gave a detailed look into the way the Aristocrats of the Heian period lived. While this doesn't give a lot of insight into the lives of daily people, it can be very valuable, and the idea of approaching history from a cultural perspective is a refreshing change from the usual military or political history that survives from so many eras.

Moissala, in the south of Chad, on the border with Central African Republic. From June to November, the number of cases of malaria increased five-fold. To diagnose and treat malaria cases as swiftly as possible, access to treatment needs to move beyond the hospital and into the villages. For those who live too far from a healthcare centre, the first contact will be the malaria village worker. Minh-Ly Pham, Médecins Sans Frontières Head of Mission (in French): "The malaria village workers are chosen by the community and then trained by Médecins Sans Frontières to screen patients for malaria, to give the first dose of treatment and to assess the severity of each case." In the south of Chad, in the province of Nya-Pende, there are long stretches of dirt roads before you reach the refugee camps. This region is now home to more than 30,000 refugees who fled the war in their homeland, the Central African Republic. Since 2002, they crossed the borders into southern Chad, desperate for security and shelter. In response to the crisis, the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Department and the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, provided humanitarian aid to save lives. Three camps were built with the cooperation of the Chadian government. Ten years later, the EU's Development cooperation programme enables those who have settled in the camps some to plan a future.

The announcement is a setback for France, which has sent 2,000 troops to its former colony but is struggling to stem a wave of sectarian bloodletting that has driven hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.

(New York, May 14, 2014) Ambassadors Series Africa Panel #3: African Solutions to African Problems aimed at serving as a platform to bring diplomats accredited to the United Nations together with academics, experts and civil society to engage with one another, and to discuss global issues and exchange multiple perspectives, was held at the Peace Islands Institute in partnership with the Journalists and Writers Foundation.
H.E. Tunde Adetunji, President/CEO of the African Heritage Foundation, moderated the panel discussion. H.E Charles T. Ntwaagae, Permanent Representative of Botswana, H.E Cherif Mahamat Zene, Permanent Representative of Chad, and H.E Hermenegilde Niyonzima, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Burundi delivered the speeches respectively.

African Diaspora as the sixth region of Africa
The panel began with the moderator discussing how far Africa has come in terms of its development. Africa has always been coveted by other nations in terms of its resources. Recently the focus had pivoted towards China and India, but Africa seems to be back in the headlines in terms of foreign direct investment, labor force capacity, in addition to its natural resources. Another focus was the educated African Diaspora known as the sixth region of Africa. The potential lost from the brain drain of Africans in pursuit of education, health, and opportunity, is a challenge for the continent. An initiative has been set to change the brain drain into a brain gain and bring back the Diaspora to help Africa move forward.
Peace and Security
An area that was mentioned repeatedly among the panelists was peace and security. This continues to be a major issue in the continent. A country afflicted by unstable and dangerous conditions cannot move forward to focus on other areas of development such as the case with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Somalia and Sudan. Poverty, education, and youth unemployment also continue to be challenges for Africa. These are chronic problems that are based on past grievances dating back to countries' independence.
Rebranding Africa's image in the world
Speakers addressed the fact that Africa has suffered from a prolonged negative image, which negates the progress the continent has made since many countries' independence. Africa is seen as a war-filled, diseased and poverty ridden region, when in fact it has changed dramatically. In the political sphere many countries have gravitated towards liberal democracies. Economically many African countries have embraced a free market economy. Major improvements have been made in health, education, and overall living conditions. Budgets have been purposely redirected towards these areas and the positive effects can be seen. In particular, the example of Botswana's climb from its HIV epidemic that overran the country now provides medical aid to 95 percent of its citizens who need the treatment. In additional to political and social reform, financial aid also continues to be a hopeful area. The donor/recipient relationship has shifted to more of a partnership. This example of partnership can be seen among the public and private sector as well, known as PPP.
Overall education, development, and the potential of the Diaspora in propelling Africa forward were the hopeful takeaway messages. Africa still has many challenges ahead of it, but it continues to grow in potential motivated largely by its vast youth and Diaspora populations.

Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The ex Indian Captain has now come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper and less in reality.
The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. They have played every game but hockey to make sure they get selected every year in the Indian National team. But what does it really mean to play for the Indian National team? To play for India?
The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be possible.
Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed we can.
CHAK DE INDIA is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about honesty, sincerity and integrity. The Film became a cult classic and won its leading man the National Award and put the Indian National Sport "Hockey", back on the map.
