Peru (i/pəˈruː/; Spanish: Perú [peˈɾu]; Quechua: Piruw [pɪɾʊw];Aymara: Piruw [pɪɾʊw]), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú ), is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peru is an extremely biodiverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river.
Peruvian territory was home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, one of the oldest in the world, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima, which included most of its South American colonies. Ideas of political autonomy later spread throughout Spanish America and Peru gained its independence, which was formally proclaimed in 1821. After the battle of Ayacucho, three years after proclamation, Peru ensured its independence. After achieving independence, the country remained in recession and kept a low military profile until an economic rise based on the extraction of raw and maritime materials struck the country, which ended shortly before the war of the Pacific. Subsequently, the country has undergone changes in government from oligarchic to democratic systems. Peru has gone through periods of political unrest and internal conflict as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The United Nations announced in 2013 that Peru has overtaken Colombia as the world’s top producer of coca, the raw plant material used to manufacture cocaine. For the past two decades, Colombia has been virtually synonymous with cocaine. Now that Peru has become the global epicenter of cocaine production, the Andean nation runs the risk of becoming the world’s next great narco state. The Peruvian government is trying to crack down on the problem by ramping up eradication of coca plants, and devoting military and police resources to interdiction efforts. Despite the response — and a hefty amount of foreign aid devoted to combatting cocaine production — Peruvian coke is being consumed in the nightclubs of Lima and in cities ...

Spanish/Nat In the face of drastically rising crime rates in the past few months, Peruvians are increasingly relying on private security arrangements to protect themselves. Businessmen in particular are investing more money in security measures against kidnapping and robbery. Public confidence in the government's ability to deal with the current crime-wave is low, and private security companies are filling the gap and cashing in on this rising demand. Personal safety has become a highly profitable industry in Peru thanks to the country's rising tide of crime. Crime in the country's capital Lima, has risen by a reported 300 per cent since 1991. An estimated 600 violent offences are committed in Peru every day. Companies like Grovi Security which manufacture armoured car...

The Republic of Peru. An emerging economy with a stable macroeconomic investment climate and ‘investment grade’ credit rating. A nation with an open door policy for investment. One of the least restrictive countries in the world. Forming a land mass approximately the size of Alaska, Peru is home to just over thirty million people and borders Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Equador in the heart of South America, with a stretching coastline onto the South Pacific Ocean. Think of Brazil and the Olympics, Football and Carnival come to mind but samba back to the early 2000s and Brazil was the poster child for the emerging markets. Back in the late twentieth century Brazil’s economy had been anything but stable. Plagued by hyperinflation, the government at the time took desperate measures to ensure the currency stabilised. They did this by simply getting rid of it over a number of years and replacing it with one pegged to the value of the dollar. By the turn of the millennium “Plano Real” as it was called, started to pay dividends and after forty years of economic turmoil, inflation finally levelled off and the economy began to thrive. Brazil’s climate makes it an agricultural hotspot with coffee, sugar, soybean, meat and tobacco high on its list of raw expor...
Over the past five years, economic conditions for 7 million Peruvians have improved to the point where they are no longer considered living in poverty. This leap is historic, but not everyone is feeling the positive effects. While poverty is down in many cities dropping from 42 percent in 2001 to 16 percent in 2013. Peru has been widely hailed as an example of inclusive growth and turning economic progress into poverty reduction. CCTV America’s Dan Collyns reports.

When it comes to street food I have high standards. I've been to countries like Korea and Thailand where street food reigns supreme. Arriving in Lima, Peru I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised. Peruvian street food is some of the best in all of Latin American. When it comes to original Peruvian fast food / Peruvian junk food you absolutely have to try salchipapas or choripapas. Originating from the streets of Lima, Salchipapa literally means sausage (salchicha) and potato (papa). The dish is basically thinly sliced sausages and french fries with additional toppings such as cheese and egg and dipping sauces that include aji and ketchup. Aji de gallina is a delicious Peruvian classic - slightly spicy and bright yellow from the famous aji amarillo peppers, and rich from the unusual cream sauce made with ground walnuts. This dish is traditionally served over rice, with boiled yellow potatoes and black olives. You can buy frozen yellow aji peppers (they often look more orange than yellow) at Latin food markets. Spanish/Nat Peruvian authorities are cracking down on illegal pig farms, which they say are becoming dangerous to human health. The farms - most of which are located around rubbish dumps - provide a large percentage of the meat sold in markets. Illegal pig farms like this one in Puerto del Callao are commonplace in Peru. Officials say hundreds of pigs are raised here in unhealthy conditions and then slaughtered. They are then taken to the market where each day their meat is sold to thousands of consumers. Most pig farms are located in small shanty-towns surrounded by large rubbish dumps. This one in Puerto del Callao, 20 kilometres west of Lima, is hidden in the mountains. But health officials manage to find it anyway. They say the farms are becoming ha...

Is Peru’s New Anti-drugs Policy Too Tough Even for Washington? Could the United States defund counter-narcotics efforts in Peru, the world’s top producer of cocaine? That’s the question after Peru’s single chamber congress voted unanimously 89-0 this week to resume shooting down the small aircraft suspected of ferrying up to 150 tonnes of the drug, roughly half of national production, out of the Andean country every year. President Ollanta Humala, a former army officer who prides himself on his no-nonsense approach to drug traffickers, is expected to sign the measure into law. Although Washington has long used a carrot-and-stick approach to pressure Peru and the two other cocaine-producing nations, Colombia and Bolivia, to interdict more of the illegal export, it has also opposed a shoot ...

Peru – a land of extremes and intrigue – principally known for being home to the most important archaeological site in all of the Americas, offers in reality so much more. Its landscapes range from high Andean peaks, to sultry Amazon rainforests, from high altitude deserts and wild windswept coasts. Of course its great to travel with the Incas from Cusco to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, but its also possible to get off the beaten track, to explore remote ruins of the cloud warriors in the north, or afro-Peruvian beats along the pacific coast. Most of all it’s a diverse country that offers something for everyone. But for many, a trip to Peru will begin in Cusco. As the ancient Inca capital, and the political power base in colonial times, Cusco has its fair share of sites. Sitting in a na...
In Cusco, and the Sacred Valley, magnificent ruins await the adventurous traveler. The most famous of all is Machu Picchu. Cusco is the former capital of the Inca Empire of the Sun. Since the 16th century, Spanish colonial buildings were built atop former Inca Palaces, of which only the foundations remain. Examples in the central Plaza de Armas are the Cusco Cathedral and La Compañia church. Another striking example is Qorikancha, the former golden courtyard of the Temple of the Sun. The Spanish used stones from Sacsayhuaman, an Inca stronghold overlooking the city. In the Urubamba Valley, or Sacred Valley, visitors can see the mysterious Moray Terraces and the pre-Inca Salt Mines of Maras. Ollantaytambo is a living Inca city and its towering ruins form the start of the Inca Trail to Ma...

https://www.expedia.com/Lima.d178277.Destination-Travel-Guides Lima gives access to the mystical city of Machu Picchu in the Andes, Lake Titicaca in the highlands, the lush Amazon jungle and Peru’s coastal desert. But, before you go to see all of this, it’s worth exploring the capital first. Just like Peru’s landscapes, Lima is a city of contrasts: rich and poor, ancient and modern, practical and elegant, fascinating and entertaining. In Lima’s Historic Center is the Plaza de Armas, also known as the Plaza Mayor. This is where the Spanish explorer founded Lima and the Lima Cathedral, contains the tomb of Francisco Pizarro. Next door, the Government Palace is still the official seat of government today. Outside of the city center are many more visitor attractions. The Bajada de los Baños...
The long lost, forgotten cities of South America always were there in people’s imagination. In Peru we can dream ourselves back into the empire of the Incas, into the age of the Sun God and the ruthless conquistadors. We can travel the 1000 year old Inca trail, travel through the Sacred Valley and take a walk in the amazing ruins of Machu Picchu. We can meet kechua and uro indians, we can buy their traditional clothing and listen to their songs and music. From an airplaine, we can try to solve the secret of the Nazca lines, we can take a train to the Altiplano, we can travel through the paradise of the Paracas Paninsula on boat, we can take a look at the monuments of Lima and Cuzco, and follow Thor Heyerdahl’s path, when we sit into a boat on the Titicaca lake. -------------- Watch more t...

iquitos - peru
Ein gebrochener Arm, ein gebrochenes Herz
Mitten im Höhenflug, ein Häufchen Elend
Dann diese Augen, Dein Blick
Bringt die Wende, bringt mir Glück
Hast mich getröstet, hast mich gepflegt
Bedingungslos, freier Eintritt in meine Seele
Schlafende Geister geweckt
Dummheit gedeckt
Neuen Mut in mich hineingelacht
Oh, nimm Dir, was ich brauch'
