Australian Electoral Commission
The AEC undertakes regular research and analysis to build a strong evidence base to improve electoral participation, support the delivery of electoral services and contribute to electoral policy reform in Australia. Some research activities are for internal use only, while others are made publicly available through various channels, such as the AEC website. The AEC also engages with other bodies (such as academic institutions, the State and Territory Electoral Commissioners and the Parliamentary Library) to discuss and progress research activities.
Research is a legislated function under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918.
The Commissioner's Advisory Board on Electoral Research (CABER) is a research advisory board whose members include eminent experts in the Australian electoral system and electoral research.
On 19 and 20 November 2012 the AEC held an Electoral Research Forum at Old Parliament House in Canberra.
The AEC Electoral Research Forum brought together international experts, Australian researchers and staff from election management bodies to explore the issues around participation, engagement and enrolment in Australian elections. Rather than a stream of one-way formal presentations, the Forum encouraged discussions and networking between academic researchers and electoral practitioners around key themes of immediate relevance to the Australian electoral community.
