Referendums and plebiscites

A referendum is a vote of the Australian people on measures proposed or passed by the Australian Parliament. There are a number of different types of referendums that can be held – the most common is a Constitutional referendum.

Any proposed change to the Australian Constitution must be put to a vote of all Australian voters in a referendum.

How to enrol to vote in a referendum

If you are an Australian citizen aged 18 years or older, you are required by law to enrol and vote in referendums and federal elections.
