Taishan

Taishan also called Toishan (Chinese: 台山; pinyin: Táishān; Jyutping: toi⁴ saan¹; Taishanese: Hoisan [hɔ̀isān]) is a coastal county-level city in southern Guangdong province in the People's Republic of China. At the 2010 census, its population was 941,095 inhabitants even though only 394,855 were considered as urban.

Taishan calls itself the "No. 1 Home of Overseas Chinese". An estimated half a million Chinese Americans are of Taishanese descent.

Geography

Taishan is located in the Pearl River Delta, in the southwest of Jiangmen, to which it administratively belongs, and 140 kilometres west of Hong Kong. It contains 95 islands and islets, including the largest island in Guangdong, Shangchuan Island.

Taishan is one of the Five Counties in Guangdong, previously called Sze Yup which excluded Heshan, and is now part of the Greater Taishan Region.

History

On 12 February 1499 during the Ming dynasty, Taishan was founded as Xinning County (Chinese: 新宁县) from land in the southwest of Xinhui County. Xinning was romanized as "Sunning" during the late Qing dynasty, as well as "Sinning", "Hsinning", "Hsînnîng" and "Llin-nen".

Taishan Dong

Dong Jianjun (Chinese: 董建军; pinyin: Dǒng Jiànjūn; born 18 May 1988), known by his ring name Taishan Dong, is a Chinese professional boxer who fights at heavyweight.

Amateur career

Dong initially started out in basketball and kickboxing, taking the ring name Taishan after the mountain of the same name. In February 2013, he floored Bob Sapp in a kickboxing fight held in Tokyo. Dong met with boxing promotor Liu Gang who persuaded him to take up professional boxing.

Professional career

After arriving in America at the start of 2014 with ambitions to become a professional boxer, Dong met with attorney George Gallegos. Gallegos, who would later become his manager, introduced him to boxing trainer John Bray. Dong did not understand English at the time and Bray was unable to speak Chinese but the pair bonded over their shared interest in boxing. In July, Dong fought his professional debut against Alex Rozman (2-6-0), which Dong won in a second round technical knockout. His next fight came in November, knocking out Tommy Washington Jr. (3-6-0) in just over two and a half first round minutes. In February 2015, Dong defeated Rory McCrary (3-2-0) in a unanimous decision over four rounds. Judges scored the fight 40-34, 40-34 and 39-35 in Dong's favor. His next fight came on the Canelo vs Kirkland undercard where he faced Jamal woods, Dong won the contest over 4 rounds in a majority decision win with the judges scoring the bout 40-36, 39-37 and one judge scoring it even at 38-38.

Fox Sports (United States)

Fox Sports is the programming division of the Fox Broadcasting Company, owned by 21st Century Fox, that is responsible for sports broadcasts on the network, and its dedicated regional and national sports cable channels. The flagship entity of 21st Century Fox's Fox Sports Media Group division, it was formed in 1994 with Fox's acquisition of broadcast rights to National Football League (NFL) games. In subsequent years, it has televised the National Hockey League (1994–1999), Major League Baseball (1996–present), NASCAR (2001–present), Bowl Championship Series (2007–2010), the USGA Championships (2015–present), and the FIFA World Cup (starting in 2018).

History

When the Fox Broadcasting Company launched in October 1986, the network's management, having seen how sports programming (in particular, soccer events) played a critical role in the growth of the British satellite service BSkyB, determined that sports would be the type of programming that would ascend Fox to a major network status the quickest; as a result, Fox tried to attract a professional football package to the network. In 1987, after ABC initially hedged on renewing its contract with the National Football League (NFL) for the television rights to Monday Night Football, Fox made an offer for the package at the same price that ABC had been paying at the time – about $13 million per game. However, partly due to the fact that Fox had yet to establish itself as a major network, the NFL decided to resume negotiations with ABC, with the two parties eventually agreeing to a new contract, keeping what was the crown jewel of the league's television broadcasts on that network (where it remained until 2006, when MNF moved to sister network ESPN as part of a contract that also saw NBC gain the Sunday Night Football package).
