Two trains have been involved in a head-on collision in southern Luxembourg.

Two trains have collided in Luxembourg in a head-on-incident that has left at least one person dead and multiple people injured, according to Luxembourg police.

The accident occurred in southern Luxembourg at around 9am Tuesday morning local time when a passenger train crashed into a freight locomotive, the Daily Star has reported.

One dead was taken to hospital from the wreck but died from their injuries, police have confirmed.

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the number injured in the incident, with the initial police statement saying six were injured. There are also unconfirmed reports of passengers remaining trapped in the wreckage, trying to communicate with rescue workers who are attempting to free them.

The incident is believed to have occurred near the Bettembourg yard and the French border zone of Zoufftgen, close to where another train accident left six dead in 2006.

The cause of the accident and the extent of injuries remains unknown.

This is a developing story. More to come.
