The End of Award Annals
I stopped updating awards in December, 2013. I will leave the abandoned site running for as long as I am using this server for other purposes.
Award Annals has never been a commercial enterprise. I thought it was an interesting idea, something I wanted to see, so I made it. Now, seven years after I started, I will probably abandon it.
The yearly cost of maintaining the site is $600 per year (my time is free, of course). That may not seem like a large sum of money to spend for such a fabulous website, but I have come to believe that it is more than the site is worth. Traffic is pitiful, and affiliate commissions have fallen below $100/year. In short, the site is not popular enough for me to justify the time and expense.

Shortlist for the 2013 Costa Book Awards
Costa has announced the 2013 Costa Book Award shortlists. The Costa Book Awards recognise the most enjoyable books published in the last year by writers resident in the UK and Ireland. The five categories received 617 entries, and the shortlists where chosen by five panels of three judges each.
Each winner, announced 6 January 2014, will receive £5,000. The overall winner, announced 28 January 2014, will receive £30,000.

Winner of the 2013 Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books
The Royal Society has announced the winner of its 2013 Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books. The £25,000 prize was awarded to theoretical physicist, TV presenter and author, Sean Carroll by Sir Paul Nurse, Nobel Prize-winning President of the Royal Society at a ceremony at the Society’s headquarters in London.

The National Book Foundation has announced the winners of the 2013 National Book Awards. The judges selected twenty books from a field of over 1400 submitted by American publishers for American authors. Each finalist will receive $1000, a medal, and a citation. Each winner will receive $10,000 and a bronze sculpture.

Winners of the 2013 Governor General's Literary Awards
The Canada Council for the Arts has announced the 14 winners of the 2013 Governor General’s Literary Awards. The GGs, Canada’s national book awards, celebrate the excellence of Canadian writers, illustrators and translators. This year, 979 titles in the English-language categories and 624 titles in the French-language categories were submitted.
The Canada Council for the Arts funds, administers and promotes the Governor General’s Literary Awards. Each winner will receive $25,000. The publisher of each winning book will receive $3,000 to support promotional activities. Non-winning finalists each receive $1,000, bringing the total value of the awards to approximately $450,000.
The awards are given to seven works in English and seven works in French. Listed below are the English language winners in the categories of Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction, Children’s Literature (Text and Illustration).
The winner for Drama is Nicolas Billon for Fault Lines.
The winner for Translation is Donald Winkler for his English translation of The Major Verbs by Pierre Nepveu.

Winner of the 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize
The winner of the 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize was announced at a black-tie dinner and award ceremony hosted by Jian Ghomeshi, attended by nearly 500 members of the publishing, media and arts communities. The largest annual literary prize in Canada, the prize awarded CDN$50,000 to the author of the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English, and CDN$5,000 to each of the finalists.
The shortlist and ultimate winner were selected by the esteemed three-member jury empanelled for the 2013 prize: Canadian writers Margaret Atwood and Esi Edugyan; and American author Jonathan Lethem.

Winners of the 2013 World Fantasy Awards
The winners of the 2013 World Fantasy Awards have been announced. All nominated works of Fantasy were published in 2012. Two nominations were chosen by attendees of the World Fantasy Convention, while the remaining nominees were chosen by the award judges: Holly Black, Tom Clegg Marc Laidlaw Stephen Laws, Stephanie Smith, and Peter Dennis Pautz.

Shortlist for the 2013 T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry
The Poetry Book Society has announced its shortlist for the 2013 T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry. Judges Ian Duhig (Chair), Imtiaz Dharker and Vicki Feaver have chosen six collections from the 113 books submitted by publishers, which join the four PBS Choices to make up the ten collections on the shortlist.
The winner will be announced at the Award Ceremony on Monday 13 January 2014, when the winner will be presented with a cheque for £15,000, donated by the T.S. Eliot Trustees, following on in the tradition of Mrs Valerie Eliot, who generously gave the prize money from the inception of the Prize. The shortlisted poets will each receive £1,000.

Fall winners of the 2013 CWA Daggers
The Crime Writers’ Association has announced the Fall winners of its 2013 CWA Dagger Awards—the awards which celebrate the best in contemporary crime writing. The winners of the ornamental daggers and cash prizes were revealed at the Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards in London.
The Fall Daggers are the Gold Dagger for best crime novel, the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for best thriller, and the John Creasey New Blood Dagger for best debut. The winners are:

Winner of the 2013 Guardian Children's Fiction Prize
The Guardian Review has announced the winner of their 2013 Children’s Fiction Prize. Rebecca Stead’s Liar & Spy was chosen by children's authors Andy Mulligan, Jason Wallace and Hilary McKay. The judging panel was chaired by the Guardian Children's Books editor, Julia Eccleshare. Young readers taking part in the Guardian's 2013 Young Critics competition—as well as members of the Guardian's children's book site—also had their say as they judged the longlisted books.

Winner of the 2013 Man Booker Prize
The winner of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction has been chosen from a shortlist of six books, each authored by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.
Each of the six shortlisted authors will be awarded £2,500 and a specially commissioned beautifully handbound edition of his/her book. Eleanor Catton will receive a further £50,000.

Shortlist for the 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize
The Scotiabank Giller Prize jury has announced its 2013 shortlist. The five finalists were chosen by the award-winning, three-member jury empanelled for the 2013 prize: Canadian writers Margaret Atwood and Esi Edugyan; and American author Jonathan Lethem. The shortlist was selected from a longlist of 13 books. One hundred and forty seven titles were submitted by 61 publishing houses from across the country.
Each finalist will receive CDN$5000. The winner, announced in Toronto on November 5, will receive CDN$50,000.

Winner of the 2012 Hammett Prize
The North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers has announced the winner of their 2012 Hammett Prize for a work of literary excellence in the field of crime writing by a US or Canadian author. The winning title was chosen from five Hammett nominees by a group of three distinguished outside judges:
- Rob Dougherty, Manager of the Clinton Book Shop, in New Jersey
- Janet Groth, author of The Receptionist: An Education at The New Yorker
- Edward D. Miller, professor of Film and Theatre (CUNY), and author of Tomboys, Pretty Boys, and Outspoken Women
Mr. Owen was awarded a bronze trophy, designed by West Coast sculptor, Peter Boiger. The award ceremony took place in Somerset, New Jersey, on October 1, during the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association’s (NAIBA) Fall Conference.

Winners of the 2013 Anthony Awards
Bouchercon, the World Mystery Convention, has announced their 27th annual Anthony Award winners. The nominations were taken from votes cast by 2012 and 2013 attendees of the BoucherCon World Mystery Convention. Attendees of BoucherCon 2013 voted for this year's winners. The award is named after Anthony Boucher, a book reviewer and early champion of the mystery genre.

Winners of the 2013 Shamus Awards
The Private Eye Writers of America (PWA) has announced the winners of its 32nd annual Shamus Awards. The Award was founded in 1981 by Robert J. Randisi to recognize outstanding achievement in private eye fiction. The awards were presented at the PWA Banquet at Bouchercon in Albany, New York.
