In March I had the opportunity to tour NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. I had been wanting to visit JPL for years, so I was thrilled! Many thanks to JPL's Roslyn Soto for being our tour guide for the afternoon.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a federally funded research and development center and NASA field center located in La Cañada Flintridge, California and Pasadena, California, United States.
The JPL is managed by the nearby California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for NASA. The laboratory's primary function is the construction and operation of planetary robotic spacecraft, though it also conducts Earth-orbit and astronomy missions. It is also responsible for operating NASA's Deep Space Network.
Among the laboratory's current major active projects are the Mars Science Laboratory mission (which includes the Curiosity rover), the Cassini–Huygens mission orbiting Saturn, the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Dawn mission to the dwarf planet Ceres and asteroid Vesta, the Juno spacecraft en route to Jupiter, the NuSTAR X-ray telescope, and the Spitzer Space Telescope. They are also responsible for managing the JPL Small-Body Database, and provides physical data and lists of publications for all known small Solar System bodies.

INFO: Juno is a NASA space probe orbiting the planet Jupiter. It was built by Lockheed Martin and is operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5, 2011 (UTC), as part of the New Frontiers program, and entered a polar orbit of Jupiter on July 5, 2016 (UTC), to begin a 20 month scientific investigation of the planet. The Voyager 2 spacecraft is a 722-kilogram (1,592 lb) space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977 to study the outer Solar System and eventually interstellar space. Operating for 34 years, 7 months and 2 days as of today (22 March 2012), the spacecraft receives routine commands and transmits data back to the Deep Space Network.
Part of the Voyager program with its identical sister craft Voyager 1, the spacecraft is currently in extended mission, tasked with locating and studying the boundaries of the Solar System, including the Kuiper belt, the heliosphere and interstellar space. The primary mission ended December 31, 1989 after encountering the Jovian system in 1979, Saturnian system in 1980, Uranian system in 1986, and the Neptunian system in 1989. It was the first probe to provide detailed images of the outer gas giants...
Conceived in the 1960s, a Grand Tour proposal to study the outer planets, prompted NASA to begin work on a mission in the early 1970s. The development of the interplanetary probes coincided with an alignment of the planets, making possible a mission to the outer Solar System by taking advantage of the then-new technique of gravity assist.
It was determined that utilizing gravity assists would enable a single probe to visit the four gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) while requiring a minimal amount of propellant and a shorter transit duration between planets. Originally, Voyager 2 was planned as Mariner 12 of the Mariner program however, due to congressional budget cuts, the mission was scaled back to be a flyby of Jupiter and Saturn, and renamed the Mariner Jupiter-Saturn probes. As the program progressed, the name was later changed to Voyager as the probe designs began to differ greatly from previous Mariner missions.
Upon a successful flyby of the Saturnian moon Titan, by Voyager 1, Voyager 2 would get a mission extension to send the probe on towards Uranus and Neptune...
Spacecraft design
Constructed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Voyager 2 included 16 hydrazine thrusters, three-axis stabilization, gyroscopes and celestial referencing instruments (Sun sensor/Canopus Star Tracker) to maintain pointing of the high-gain antenna toward Earth. Collectively these instruments are part of the Attitude and Articulation Control Subsystem (AACS) along with redundant units of most instruments and 8 backup thrusters. The spacecraft also included 11 scientific instruments to study celestial objects as it traveled through space.
Communications
Built with the intent for eventual interstellar travel, Voyager 2 included a large, 3.7-meter parabolic, high-gain antenna (see diagram) to transceive data with the Deep Space Network on Earth. Communications are conducted over the S-band (13 cm wavelength) and X-band (3.6 cm wavelength) providing bandwidth as high as 115.2 kilobits per second. When the spacecraft is unable to communicate with Earth, the Digital Tape Recorder (DTR) is able to record up to 62,500-kilobytes of data to later transmit when communication is reestablished.
Power
The spacecraft was built with 3 Multihundred-Watt radioisotope thermoelectric generators (MHW RTG). Each RTG includes 24 pressed plutonium oxide spheres and provide enough heat to generate approximately 157 watts of power at launch. Collectively, the RTGs supply the spacecraft with 470 watts at launch and will allow operations to continue until at least 2020...

The Voyager 2 spacecraft is a 722-kilogram (1,592 lb) space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977 to study the outer Solar System and eventually interstellar space. Operating for 34 years, 7 months and 2 days as of today (22 March 2012), the spacecraft receives routine commands and transmits data back to the Deep Space Network.
Part of the Voyager program with its identical sister craft Voyager 1, the spacecraft is currently in extended mission, tasked with locating and studying the boundaries of the Solar System, including the Kuiper belt, the heliosphere and interstellar space. The primary mission ended December 31, 1989 after encountering the Jovian system in 1979, Saturnian system in 1980, Uranian system in 1986, and the Neptunian system in 1989. It was the first probe to provide detailed images of the outer gas giants...
Conceived in the 1960s, a Grand Tour proposal to study the outer planets, prompted NASA to begin work on a mission in the early 1970s. The development of the interplanetary probes coincided with an alignment of the planets, making possible a mission to the outer Solar System by taking advantage of the then-new technique of gravity assist.
It was determined that utilizing gravity assists would enable a single probe to visit the four gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) while requiring a minimal amount of propellant and a shorter transit duration between planets. Originally, Voyager 2 was planned as Mariner 12 of the Mariner program however, due to congressional budget cuts, the mission was scaled back to be a flyby of Jupiter and Saturn, and renamed the Mariner Jupiter-Saturn probes. As the program progressed, the name was later changed to Voyager as the probe designs began to differ greatly from previous Mariner missions.
Upon a successful flyby of the Saturnian moon Titan, by Voyager 1, Voyager 2 would get a mission extension to send the probe on towards Uranus and Neptune...
Spacecraft design
Constructed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Voyager 2 included 16 hydrazine thrusters, three-axis stabilization, gyroscopes and celestial referencing instruments (Sun sensor/Canopus Star Tracker) to maintain pointing of the high-gain antenna toward Earth. Collectively these instruments are part of the Attitude and Articulation Control Subsystem (AACS) along with redundant units of most instruments and 8 backup thrusters. The spacecraft also included 11 scientific instruments to study celestial objects as it traveled through space.
Communications
Built with the intent for eventual interstellar travel, Voyager 2 included a large, 3.7-meter parabolic, high-gain antenna (see diagram) to transceive data with the Deep Space Network on Earth. Communications are conducted over the S-band (13 cm wavelength) and X-band (3.6 cm wavelength) providing bandwidth as high as 115.2 kilobits per second. When the spacecraft is unable to communicate with Earth, the Digital Tape Recorder (DTR) is able to record up to 62,500-kilobytes of data to later transmit when communication is reestablished.
Power
The spacecraft was built with 3 Multihundred-Watt radioisotope thermoelectric generators (MHW RTG). Each RTG includes 24 pressed plutonium oxide spheres and provide enough heat to generate approximately 157 watts of power at launch. Collectively, the RTGs supply the spacecraft with 470 watts at launch and will allow operations to continue until at least 2020...

So finally SpaceX and NASA are working together on a proposed SpaceX Mars mission.
SpaceX plans to send a Red Dragon spacecraft lander to Mars sometimes 2018.
Elon Musk hopes to prove the concept works and can be
used in future missions to the red planet. Red Dragon will be tested however Mars has very thin atmosphere and propulsive landing has its limits
NASA has similar plans, however their timetable isn’t as audacious, they’re best with problems, Orion spacecraft has been delayed by at least 3 years and SLS Launcher is yet to be tested fully.
SpaceX on the other hand is testing Raptor engines and is about to test Falcon Heavy rocket in December with first commercial flight scheduled for March 2017.
Raptor is the first member of a family of cryogenic methane-fuelled rocket engines under development by SpaceX. It is specifically intended to power high-performance lower and upper stages for SpaceX super-heavy launch vehicles. The engine will be powered by liquid methane and liquid oxygen.
However NASA has extensive experience and expertise with Mars landings and is working on a technology that SpaceX lacks. Namely Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator technology, something NASA and JPL have been working on for few years now.
Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator is a lander technology that creates a drag and slows down re-entry vehicle as it enters planet’s atmosphere. The goal of the project is to develop a re-entry system capable of landing 2- to 3-ton payloads on Mars, as opposed to the 1-ton limit of the currently used systems. However LDSD Technology won’t be tested on 2018 mission as it is not ready, the extent of NASA co-operation with SpaceX will allow SpaceX access to NASA’s Deep Space Network to communicate and guide its spacecraft. Interplanetary navigation experts at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will be the ones plotting the course of the craft.
Other than that, NASA will also be helping SpaceX to determine the best landing sites for the craft, guide and analyse the Red Dragon during entry, and evaluate the different systems in the craft.
The success of SpaceX 2018 Mars mission should pave way for future NASA/SpaceX collaboration and perhaps even NASA financing part of the very first manned mission to Mars.
Proposed 2018 SpaceX mission to Mars is set to cost between $300-320 million. NASA’s similar mission to Mars normally costs in region of $1.7-1.85 billion. Another reason why NASA is on-board with SpaceX Mars mission.

What if outer space tourism were possible? The travel posters might look something like these. For its Visions of the Future project, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) commissioned artists to design a series of travel posters that depict an exotic locale in our solar system — from Venus and Mars to Ceres, the recently photographed dwarf planet — illustrated in a vintage style that evokes classic travel posters. Fourteen posters, including three new ones from artists Don and Ryan Clark, are available for free download and printing.
“The posters are the brainchild of The Studio at JPL, a design and strategy team that works with JPL scientists and engineers to visualize and depict complex science and technology topics,” JPL writes. “Their work is used in designing space missions and in sharing the work of NASA/JPL with the public.”

You have the option to download a printable version or a high-resolution one. The printable version is a PDF, and it’s a relatively small 2.3MB file. The high-res version is a large 206MB uncompressed TIFF file. Unless you’re using Adobe Photoshop to tweak the image for reproduction in a magazine, the TIFF file is overkill for general at-home printing. (Whatever you do, do not print the JPEG thumbnails.)
The PDF version’s dimensions are 83 x 125 inches at 72 dpi (20 x 30 at 300 dpi), and it’s a universally recognized file format. If you’re making standard 8.5 x 11 (letter-sized) prints, you can simply hit the print button and scale to fit. If you use Adobe Acrobat Reader or Google’s Picasa, the software’s print menu will have a variety of output options preset for you. (We’re giving you the easy method; more advanced users can use photo-editing software like Photoshop to crop or resize it to their requirements, as well as make other adjustments.)
However, to achieve the best results, use a high-quality, six-color inkjet photo printer and premium semi-gloss, matte, or satin paper. With premium papers, note their ICC profiles (downloadable from the vendors’ website) and use the color management tab in the printer driver to apply that profile.
But no matter how high the quality, letter-sized prints won’t fully do justice to these images — these glorious artworks deserve to be outputted on large, poster-sized paper, and luckily the files are big enough to be printed up to 20 x 30 inches, which is a typical size for posters (you could go larger if you don’t mind quality degradation, but we do). If you want to print just one of these posters, you could simply have a specialty print shop (like a Staples or FedEx Office) pump one out for you — in 20 x 30 — on a professional large-format printer, pay a small price (around $15), put it in a nice frame, and call it a day. But if you have access to a large-format desktop inkjet, you could make several of these prints yourself – up to 17 inches in width and whatever length your paper is.
Chances are, you don’t own a large-format printer, but there’s still a way to make a large wall-sized print with a regular printer. You could use software like Block Posters or the Rasterbator, but these services require converting the PDF (or TIFF) to a JPEG. Again, use Adobe Acrobat Reader’s print menu instead: In the Page Sizing & Handling section, you can choose the Poster option and print it on eight 8.5 x 11 sheets. There’s some manual labor involved, as you’ll need to trim the papers; there are guide marks on where to cut, and you’ll need to stitch them carefully while taping them to the wall or putting them within a 20 x 30 frame.

The spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5, 2011 (UTC), as part of the New Frontiers program, and entered a polar orbit of Jupiter on July 5, 2016 (UTC), to begin a 20 month scientific investigation of the planet. INFO:
Juno is a NASA space probe orbiting the planet Jupiter. It was built by Lockheed Martin and is operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5, 2011 (UTC), as part of the New Frontiers program, and entered a polar orbit of Jupiter on July 5, 2016 (UTC), to begin a 20 month scientific investigation of the planet. After completing its mission, Juno will be intentionally deorbited into Jupiter's atmosphere.
