Green Bistro

Allotment at Buchanans
By treading lightly and brightly; maintaining place and reducing impact; supporting best green practice and constant improvement we aim to minimise Buchanan Foods environmental damage.

We aim to provide delicious, wholesome and healthy food using local and organic produce wherever possible. Vegetables and salads are grown on our allotment or supplied by Vital Veg. Organic dried goods, tins and soft drinks are sourced through Greencity Wholefoods and organic milk, cream and butter are delivered by Grahams Dairy. Hugh Grierson Organics provide our organic chicken and pork.

As part of our commitment to sustainability we compost our food waste and use compostable napkins, disposable cups, spoons, forks and straws supplied by Vegware. All our other recyclable waste is collected by Keenan Recycling Ltd.

We support our local community by participating in the Best of Banchory discount card scheme. We offer a 10% discount on food on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 5pm and 7pm. Best of Banchory cards can also be purchased at the Bistro. For further details about the card and participating businesses visit the Best of Banchory website

Whether you are heading out to visit us from Aberdeen or from Royal Deeside, reduce your carbon footprint and take the bus. Banchory has regular bus services operated by Stagecoach.  click here for bus timetables.

Or why not cycle or walk along The Deeside Way! PDF download maps of the different stages of the route are available from at www.deesideway.org. If your bike isn’t quite up to it, bike repair and hire are available from Cycle Highlands and Bike Station in Ballater.

“A Green Day in Deeside”
Many of our fellow businesses in and around Deeside share our commitment to long-term sustainability. The Crannach Bakery at Cambus o’May near Ballater uses organic flours to produces homemade artisan breads which can be bought on site, and runs bread making workshops during spring and autumn. Meats, cheeses, vegetables, preserves and honey from local suppliers can also be found at the Finzean Farm Shop. Wark Farm at Cushnie produces high quality organic meat for sale locally through their own on-site butchery, promoting the highest standards of animal welfare and sustainability. They also run experience days where you can walk, eat and talk your way round organic farming, food production and meat cookery. Further afield, Foodstory in Aberdeen use local and organic produce to create healthy, wholesome food,  served in a café where almost everything is made from recycled materials.

If outdoor pursuits are what you are looking for, Glentanar Estate offers fishing, riding, scenic walks and guided tours of the estate. Where refreshments are provided they use local produce from the estate, and holiday cottages are available to rent if you wish to extend your visit.
